Binance founder Changpeng Zhao stated that Bitcoin could eventually eclipse gold in significance if nations continue adopting it as a strategic reserve asset.

Bitcoin’s potential to challenge gold’s dominance

Speaking at a Bitcoin Asia fireside chat published by Bitcoin Magazine on August 28, 2026, Zhao outlined the conditions that could allow Bitcoin to overtake gold in terms of global standing. He attributed gold’s current lead not to any inherent property of the metal, but to a well-established system of valuation, custody, and reserve protocols built over decades by national governments and central banks.

Zhao, widely known in the crypto industry as CZ, is the founder of Binance, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges by trading volume. He explained that replacing the existing gold infrastructure would require extensive time and effort, especially for major economies with highly developed financial institutions. This structural advantage, he noted, is gold’s chief edge in the global monetary system.

Despite gold’s entrenched status, Zhao argued that Bitcoin maintains a superior long-term outlook. He identified only one real threat to this trajectory: the sudden appearance of a significantly more advanced digital asset before Bitcoin fully narrows the gap with gold. However, he described this outcome as unlikely given the current pace of technological development in the digital currency sector.

Gold’s lead is based on infrastructure and tradition. Once countries start building similar valuation and reserve systems around Bitcoin, we could see it overtake gold in a relatively short span of time, especially if adoption accelerates among governments and large institutions.

Zhao added that price movements reflect this potential shift. He suggested Bitcoin’s path toward $1 million per coin could come sooner than many current forecasts anticipate, provided its use as a national reserve and in pension funds continues to increase.

The role of governments in Bitcoin’s reserve future

According to Zhao, government policy will directly influence the pace of Bitcoin’s potential to serve as a global reserve. He stressed that Bitcoin itself does not inherently alter state power, since outcomes vary depending on each government’s choices and regulatory approach.

Zhao remarked that an increasing number of governments are taking the idea of Bitcoin reserves seriously, even when regulatory frameworks are not yet fully defined. He observed that senior officials who lived through years of critical media coverage of digital assets can be slower to embrace the sector, but noted that this attitude is beginning to shift as global adoption expands.

The most important step for governments is to establish clear rules for cryptocurrencies, consider national Bitcoin reserves, and explore stablecoins or tokenized assets as part of long-term digital strategies.

He mentioned the United Arab Emirates, United States, Japan, and Hong Kong as jurisdictions leading with different approaches to crypto integration into their financial ecosystems.

Zhao also linked Bitcoin’s future to emerging technology, especially artificial intelligence. He expects AI agents to increasingly handle crypto transactions, beginning with stablecoins and gradually expanding into Bitcoin itself.

Mini dictionary: AI agents, or artificial intelligence agents, are software programs that can make autonomous decisions and execute transactions based on programmed goals. In finance, AI agents have begun facilitating payments and managing digital asset portfolios without human intervention.

Within this framework, Zhao described Bitcoin’s primary function as a savings vehicle. He suggested that Bitcoin’s ongoing institutional adoption and growing trust among governments position it to gain ground on gold as a globally recognized reserve asset.
