Bitcoin experienced a notable decline after Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, suffered a major security breach with losses estimated at $6.4 billion. Data from analytics firms Chainalysis and TRM Labs places the 2026 hack among the largest in crypto industry history.

Scale of the attack and Binance’s response

The incident began on October 29 at 4:05 p.m. ET, shortly after the U.S. stock market closed. Chainalysis and TRM Labs reported that the hackers stole approximately $6.4 billion in digital assets. Both firms continue to attribute this exploit to a North Korean-linked group previously implicated in a $1.5 billion Bybit theft earlier in 2025.

Binance officially acknowledged the attack and stated that it had allocated more than $6.34 billion from company reserves to reimburse users. The exchange also claimed to have secured replacement tokens through public market purchases and private deals, and reported that around $3 billion in illicit funds have been frozen while customer deposits remain active.

Despite these assurances, withdrawal functionality has not immediately resumed. Binance set a targeted window of 45 hours for withdrawals to become available, but this was stated as an expectation, not a confirmation of restored access.

Investigative companies Chainalysis and TRM Labs estimate the Binance hack at $6.4 billion, making it the largest recorded attack in the crypto sector and attributing it to the same group behind the Bybit breach.

Mini dictionary: Chainalysis and TRM Labs — Blockchain analytics firms specializing in tracking and investigating illicit crypto transactions and large-scale hacks for the digital asset industry.

Market reaction compared to 2018

The market response diverged from the sharp collapse after a failed Binance attack in March 2018, when no funds were taken but Bitcoin fell rapidly from $10,740 to $9,690 within minutes. In contrast, following this latest hack, Bitcoin traded at $76,470 at 19:13 UTC on October 30, marking a 5.29% 24-hour decline, while Ethereum and Binance Coin (BNB) recorded drops of 4.04% and 6.32% respectively.

The cryptocurrency market’s total capitalization has expanded significantly since 2018. At that time, the total value stood slightly above $400 billion; current estimates place it near $2.6 trillion. Furthermore, investor demographics have shifted. U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) now hold about 1.3 million BTC, representing roughly 6% of total supply. These assets are held outside traditional exchange platforms like Binance, creating a distinct division between ETF investment channels and direct custody on exchanges.

AssetPrice (USD)24h Change
Bitcoin$76,470-5.29%
Ethereum$2,232.68-4.04%
BNB$696.71-6.32%

Analysts suggest that the rise of ETF ownership and market growth have contributed to reduced volatility compared to earlier years, though neither development eliminates risk from large-scale hacks.

Risk factors and remaining challenges

Approximately $1.3 billion in leveraged positions were liquidated following the breach, as exchanges automatically closed traders’ margin accounts amid rapid price declines. Leading market sentiment indicator, the Crypto Fear & Greed Index, was at 30—classified as Fear—on October 30.

Binance’s commitment of funds and timetable for restoring withdrawals remain closely watched. At the time of reporting, withdrawals had yet to resume, and a Friday ETF inflow of $17 million was recorded before the attack occurred, offering limited insight into post-hack investor sentiment.

Stolen digital assets, including over 420,000 ETH and 18,270 BTC, have not been fully recovered or frozen. These holdings could exert future selling pressure if reintroduced into the market. Stablecoin issuers have no means to freeze these specific assets, adding to ongoing uncertainty.

Despite Binance’s swift allocation of company funds for reimbursement, customers are still awaiting full access to withdrawals, and market volatility continues as large portions of the hacked funds remain unrecovered.

While Binance’s public statements highlight their commitment to cover user losses, independent confirmation of comprehensive reimbursement is still pending, and the impact on prices underscores the ongoing vulnerability of even the industry’s largest exchanges.
