Bitcoin Core contributor Antoine Poinsot, a leading researcher at Chaincode Labs, has addressed growing concerns surrounding artificial intelligence and quantum computing risks in Bitcoin’s address security. His remarks came after researcher Justin Drake’s viral post questioning whether recent technological advances have compromised Bitcoin’s underlying cryptography.

AI, quantum threats and evidence standards

Poinsot responded to concerns by emphasizing the need for rigorous evidence before making claims about threats to Bitcoin’s cryptographic security. He stated that while the theoretical risk from post-quantum or artificial intelligence-enabled attacks has long been a subject of discussion, there is no current proof that these technologies can break Bitcoin’s network defenses.

He also underlined the importance of distinguishing between well-researched threats and speculative scenarios that might generate unnecessary fear among users and developers.

Security researchers maintain that evidence, not speculation, should guide debate about Bitcoin’s resilience against emerging attack vectors such as AI or quantum computing.

Drake’s post fueled debate in the community and heightened calls for clarity about possible vulnerabilities. However, Poinsot cautioned that reactionary measures may distract teams from tackling more immediate security issues.

Consensus upgrades and soft forks

Poinsot cited lessons from the failed summer soft fork proposal, which highlighted challenges in building agreement for protocol upgrades. He explained that bundling multiple fixes into large consensus changes can hinder adoption and make coordination more complex within the Bitcoin development community.

Recent efforts such as BIP 54 aim to address long-standing bugs in Bitcoin’s codebase while simplifying the upgrade path. According to Poinsot, securing broad community support remains a key hurdle for these types of core improvements.

The discussion extended to other proposals, including BIP 360, BIP 361, and updates to P2TR v2, each offering different technical routes to enhancing wallet functionality and security.

Quantum risk context and mitigation strategies

The long-term dangers posed by quantum computers remain theoretical for now, but the potential for “quantum theft” or frozen coins is acknowledged among developers. Poinsot stressed that preparing early is critical, as an unanticipated breakthrough in quantum computing could undermine the security of Bitcoin wallets holding funds in exposed public addresses.

He also clarified that hiding public keys behind hashes does not remove all risk, countering claims that this method fully shields users from future cryptanalytic advances. Instead, approaches such as using multisignature wallets and technologies like Liana help reduce single points of failure and make Bitcoin storage more resilient.

Mini dictionary: Chaincode Labs, a leading research group focused on advancing Bitcoin protocol development, is known for supporting open-source cryptography and decentralized technology.

The discussion also drew on lessons from previous incidents, such as Coldcard’s hardware wallet security event, illustrating the need for robust and diversified protection measures within the ecosystem.

Preparing for disruptive technologies like quantum computers by upgrading network defense strategies can help protect user funds and network integrity without succumbing to fear-driven reactions.
