Bitcoin traded steadily within the $77,580 to $78,800 range as heightened geopolitical tension and shifting ETF flows weighed on global markets. The cryptocurrency’s resilience followed a United States airstrike on an Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital conduit for international oil shipments.

Market reactions to geopolitical events

The strike in the Middle East quickly sent shockwaves through energy markets. West Texas Intermediate crude oil climbed nearly 2% to $85.10 per barrel, while Brent crude reached $92.39. Choices in safe-haven assets diverged: gold dropped 0.8% to $4,418 per ounce and Nasdaq futures slipped 0.5%.

Throughout these moves, Bitcoin remained notably stable with limited price fluctuation. During August, Bitcoin posted a 23% gain – the strongest monthly performance among the main global asset classes. Gold increased by 9% over the same period, while the tech-focused Nasdaq advanced 4%.

Market analyst Ted Pillows commented that Bitcoin’s momentum indicators are weakening and predicted a possible pullback to $74,000 before targeting moves above $81,000.

Ted Pillows highlighted that Bitcoin continues to hover near $78,000, but sees a loss of upward momentum. He suggests the price may move down to $74,000 before challenging new highs above $81,000.

On-chain activity suggested growing institutional engagement. Blockchain analytics specialist Ali Charts reported that large investors acquired 39,154 BTC, with a total value close to $3 billion, in the past week.

ETF fund flows and support levels

According to Farside Investors, spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $242.3 million in net inflows on August 27, but reversed with $201.9 million in net outflows the following day. This marked the end of a continuous nine-day streak of positive inflows. In contrast, Ethereum-based ETFs reported $102.1 million in net inflows, maintaining ten consecutive sessions in positive territory.

Investment manager BlackRock reported over $1.58 billion in combined inflows to its spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs during the week. Michael Saylor, executive chairman at Strategy, alluded to renewed Bitcoin acquisition prospects in a social media update, noting the firm’s ongoing monitoring of market conditions.

Technical analysts established critical resistance for Bitcoin at $79,400 to $80,800, with key support levels just below at $77,000 and further at $75,000. Sustained closes above $81,800 may allow a move toward the $85,000 target, while a break below $75,000 could leave Bitcoin exposed to a deeper test of $70,000.

Upcoming macroeconomic risks

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh addressed global policymakers at Jackson Hole, maintaining a hawkish tone. Warsh stated that inflation continues to exceed the Fed’s target and current monetary policy may not be sufficiently restrictive. The probability of a September interest rate hike now stands at 58%, according to market estimations.

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh insisted that inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target and upcoming rate cuts may prove more elusive. The policy outlook prompted markets to price in a higher chance of rate increases in September.

Investors will watch several key economic releases this week, including the ISM Manufacturing PMI and JOLTS job openings data on Tuesday, ADP employment figures and the Federal Reserve Beige Book on Wednesday, and the nonfarm payrolls report on Friday.

Vikram Subbaraj, CEO of Giottus, underscored Bitcoin’s stability above significant support at $77,000, but emphasized the need for a close above $81,800 to sustain a bullish breakout. The ETF outflows observed on August 28 introduced caution as markets entered September, ending a streak of consistent inflows.
