Bitcoin holds above $64,700 as bullish momentum clashes with bearish structural signals

In Brief

  • 🚨 Bitcoin holds above $64,700 as momentum models turn bullish, but structural signals remain bearish.

  • 📈 The Realized Price bands show most holder groups still favor distribution over accumulation.

Bitcoin maintained a position just below $65,000 this week, as renewed momentum was offset by ongoing structural resistance in the market. Over the last seven days, Bitcoin climbed to $64,792, gaining 1.59%. This modest rise was underpinned by a seven-factor ensemble model, which currently suggests a moderately bullish trend among traders.

Short-term momentum vs. long-term resistance

Short-term technical signals point to further upside. Among seven key indicators in the ensemble model, four suggest bullish conditions for Bitcoin. Market analysts highlight that positive MACD readings and a 0.74 standard deviation rise in open interest have built supportive momentum for buyers. Price action has responded, with Bitcoin rebounding toward the $65,000 area following an extended period of range-bound trading.

However, when the Realized Price metric—a structural measure tracking the average purchase price of coins by age—enters the model, the tone shifts. Including this metric brings the signal tally to eight, with four registering bearish. This adjustment drops recommended risk exposure sharply, from a full allocation to 30%.

The contrast between these two models has created a cautious stance among traders, who are uncertain whether momentum will be sufficient to break through established resistance.

Analyst Daan Crypto Trades commented that Bitcoin closed another weekly candle above the 200-weekly moving average, but cautioned that further gains would require a strong move to reclaim the 200-weekly exponential moving average. Without such a push, price action risks remaining trapped in a volatile band around $60,000.

To make the trend more decisive, Daan Crypto Trades pointed out that a robust upward surge is needed to reverse recent declines and move Bitcoin above the Weekly 200 EMA. Otherwise, Bitcoin may remain locked in the $60,000 price range without significant directional change.

Structural indicators warn of continued caution

Structural signals from the Realized Price Age-Band Crossover continue to weigh on the bullish case. This on-chain metric analyzes cost basis across five age groups to assess whether the market is exhibiting accumulation or distribution patterns.

Currently, four out of five age-band pairs remain inverted—a configuration more typical of distribution phases, where older coins are being spent or sold more than acquired. The largest negative spread, about 26.3%, persists between the one-to-three-month and six-to-twelve-month cohorts, a status that inverts expectations set by price gains since January.

The lack of dominance by recent buyers in cost basis metrics underscores persistent caution, with many market participants hesitant to significantly increase exposure at these price levels.

Historical analysis shows that the Realized Price model has achieved a full-cycle Sharpe ratio of 1.27 and a maximum drawdown of about negative 40%, which is less severe than the 76% decline seen in straightforward buy-and-hold strategies. Meanwhile, short-term momentum approaches have delivered compounded annual growth rates near 60.5%.

Throughout 2025, the structural approach produced annual gains between 23% and 29%, while buy-and-hold positions dropped 34.6%, highlighting the risk of relying on a single framework in volatile markets.

At the time of reporting, Bitcoin traded at $64,587.74, reflecting a slight 0.2% daily decrease. Trading volume totaled $17.86 billion, bringing weekly gains to almost 3%.

Despite the recent upward price movement, analysts remain alert to whether ongoing strength can reverse the Realized Price band inversion, which would signal a more durable shift in market sentiment.
