Bitcoin ordinals, a system that assigns unique identifiers to individual satoshis, have surpassed 127 million inscriptions on the Bitcoin network as of November 7, 2026. This innovation allows digital content to be embedded within single satoshis, the smallest denomination of bitcoin, using ordinary Bitcoin transactions.

Ordinals give identity to satoshis

One bitcoin consists of 100 million satoshis. Ordinal theory numbers each satoshi sequentially in the order it is mined and tracks its journey across the network. While every satoshi generally holds no unique identity under standard Bitcoin accounting, ordinal-aware software follows these assigned serial numbers by interpreting Bitcoin transactions and applying a first-in, first-out logic at the application layer.

Importantly, ordinal theory does not alter Bitcoin’s base protocol or require the creation of a new token. Instead, it provides a framework for distinguishing between satoshis and tracking their transactional histories. Without this system, sats remain fully interchangeable and indistinct on the blockchain.

Mini dictionary: Ordinal theory, an application-layer numbering system, assigns sequential numbers to satoshis (the smallest unit of bitcoin) to track individual coins through transactions without changing Bitcoin’s underlying rules.

Inscriptions and how they work

Bitcoin inscriptions attach digital content, such as images or text, to specific satoshis. The data is recorded entirely on the Bitcoin blockchain by leveraging Taproot script-path spends, ensuring permanence and transparency. This process requires two transactions: a commit transaction to establish the Taproot output referencing the content, and a reveal transaction that places the content on-chain.

If the content size exceeds 520 bytes, which is the limit for a single Taproot data push, the inscription will utilize multiple data pushes to store the full content.

Unlike NFT tokens on networks such as Ethereum, Bitcoin inscriptions do not generate a separate asset. Instead, the linkage between the digital content and the satoshi relies on ordinal theory’s tracking mechanism, emphasizing that inscriptions are not independent tokens.

Transferring and viewing inscriptions

Ownership of an inscribed satoshi transfers through ordinary Bitcoin transactions. However, only software designed to interpret ordinal data can accurately display and manage inscribed content, as standard Bitcoin wallets generally do not track or present inscriptions. The position of an inscribed satoshi within transaction outputs determines its future tracking under ordinal-aware systems.

Further, the presence of an inscription on the network does not guarantee access through any particular wallet or marketplace. For example, NFT marketplace Magic Eden officially ended its Bitcoin marketplace support on March 9, 2026, and discontinued related services later in March, highlighting that user experience depends on external services, not just the on-chain records.

Mini dictionary: Magic Eden is one of the largest multi-chain NFT marketplaces, offering trading and minting services primarily for Solana, Ethereum, and recently, Bitcoin NFTs before discontinuing Bitcoin support in March 2026.

Fees, risks, and activity data

Creating or moving inscriptions consumes Bitcoin blockspace and requires transaction fees, which fluctuate based on network conditions. As recorded on November 7, 2026, the Ordiscan dashboard listed 127,828,563 inscriptions, 34.4 GB of on-chain data, and 4,465 BTC paid in total inscription fees. These figures reflect platform-tracked activity and not the number of market participants or the liquidity of inscriptions.

Market value, user activity, and inscription counts are distinct metrics; inscription totals are not equivalent to the number of unique owners or users. Users also face general Bitcoin risks, including fee volatility, accidental mishandling, service interruptions, and persistent scams.

Recording digital content on Bitcoin does not guarantee it will hold value or remain available on popular marketplaces. Inscription totals represent blockchain activity, not demand or market ownership.

FAQs and regulatory context

Bitcoin ordinals do not constitute a new cryptocurrency or sidechain. Their operation is purely within the Bitcoin protocol, using supplemental application-layer tracking. All inscription content is retained on-chain and can follow its associated satoshi through regular transactions, provided supporting software is used.

Although there are ongoing discussions around data limits on Bitcoin, such as the previously closed BIP 110 proposal for temporary softfork restrictions, these do not alter the status of ordinals and inscriptions unless formally activated by the network.

In summary, Bitcoin ordinals and inscriptions provide a method for linking specific digital content to individual units of bitcoin, recorded and transferred through the standard transaction architecture and tracked at the software level.
