Bitcoin stabilized above $77,000 over the weekend after a decline in oil prices eased some pressure on risk assets. The move came as Brent crude oil, after surging to $109.97 per barrel on Friday, reversed course to settle at $104.61. West Texas Intermediate closed at $100.05. Despite the late pullback, Brent finished the week up more than 8%, reflecting ongoing concerns over oil supply disruptions in the Middle East.

Crypto reacts to oil-driven inflation jitters

Bitcoin responded to the retreat in oil with a rebound, rising about 0.9% on Friday to close near $77,200 after dipping as low as $76,100 earlier in the session. The leading cryptocurrency continued to hold steady, trading around $77,300 on Saturday. Other risk assets joined the recovery, with the S&P 500 gaining 0.86%, the Nasdaq rising 0.96%, and the Dow up 0.98%.

Recent volatility in the crypto market has been closely tied to oil prices, which have become a major macroeconomic factor. Higher energy costs contribute directly to rising inflation and shape expectations for interest rate decisions from global central banks.

U.S. inflation data reinforced these concerns. The consumer price index for August climbed 0.4% month-over-month and 3.4% compared to the previous year, while the producer price index increased by 5.4%. With crude oil trading above $100, analysts estimated that market odds for a Federal Reserve rate hike in the coming week had risen to between 85% and 90%.

Movements in oil prices are increasingly seen as a direct driver of crypto volatility, with investors watching inflation metrics and Federal Reserve policy signals closely.

The wave of inflation worries led to simultaneous declines in both Bitcoin and gold, as traders shifted away from assets that are seen as vulnerable to higher real interest rates.

Market leaders caution on oil supply risks

Despite Friday’s respite from soaring oil prices, industry leaders have warned that risks remain. Chevron CEO Mike Wirth stated on Friday that global crude inventories and emergency stockpiles, which had previously been used to dampen price spikes, have largely been depleted. This depletion could leave markets more exposed to fresh supply shocks, particularly with U.S. diesel prices already exceeding $6 per gallon.

The International Energy Agency echoed these concerns, projecting that global oil supply could fall by around 5.7 million barrels per day in 2026, driven by ongoing disruptions in Gulf exports and a decline in Saudi Arabian output to its lowest level in more than 30 years.

Bitcoin’s resilience this weekend puts it in a unique position. The cryptocurrency has regained ground from its recent dip below $76,100, but remains under the $80,000 mark seen earlier in the week. Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury yields, hovering near 5%, continue to attract capital away from riskier assets.

While the immediate shock from oil’s latest rally has eased, Brent’s price remains above $100 and up significantly week-on-week, signaling that any relief in crypto may be short-lived rather than a clear sign of recovery.

Global oil supply is projected to fall by 5.7 million barrels per day in 2026, as Gulf export disruptions and declining Saudi output impact market dynamics.
