Evan, one of the founders behind the Sui blockchain project, recently explored why Bitcoin continues to hold a commanding position in the crypto ecosystem, despite the proliferation of competing assets and platforms. Sui is a layer-1 blockchain designed for scalable decentralized applications, with a particular focus on ownership-based interactions and composability. Evan holds a key leadership role at Sui, shaping strategic direction around user-centric blockchain innovation.

Why Ownership Is Central To Bitcoin’s Staying Power

Evan’s assessment points to Bitcoin’s unique approach to user ownership as the core factor underpinning its ongoing dominance. Tracing origins back to the turmoil of the 2007-2008 financial crisis, he observes that Bitcoin emerged as a response to eroded confidence in centralized institutions and opaque financial infrastructure.

He highlights how Bitcoin disrupted traditional finance by offering verifiable, censorship-resistant control over assets—something previous systems failed to provide. Conventional financial services still operate using opaque intermediaries, which often result in limited transparency and added costs.

As Evan notes,

Governments have the authority to freeze accounts, while centralized platforms can suddenly exclude individuals. Bitcoin overturned this framework, giving users authentic, direct control over their digital assets.

The Altcoin Challenge: Replicating Bitcoin’s Engagement

While acknowledging Ethereum’s significant role in enabling decentralized finance through smart contracts, Evan points out that only Ethereum and the stablecoin Tether have achieved a market capitalization exceeding 10% of Bitcoin’s, with no competitor approaching the 30% mark.

He contends that many industry players mistakenly focused on technical infrastructure at the expense of delivering meaningful user ownership. Evan maintains that genuine engagement thrives when participants genuinely own, shape, and benefit from digital assets.

This sense of participation, he argues, fuels community building and active contribution within the crypto space. According to Evan,

Ownership remains the industry’s greatest strength; when individuals hold a true stake, they become more invested, collaborate, and drive real innovation. That is the path to authentic value redistribution.

Stablecoins, DeFi, And Sui’s Approach To Onchain Trust

Evan describes stablecoins as a clear example of onchain ownership at scale. In 2025, stablecoins facilitated over $59 trillion in volume across close to 13 billion transactions, overtaking traditional giants Visa and Mastercard combined by transaction count.

He views stablecoins as a key building block for the next phase of onchain developments, serving as reliable financial primitives for users worldwide. Prediction markets, where participants hold contracts and conduct trades directly, are cited as another area where decentralized ownership disrupts long-standing models.

Evan also draws attention to Hashi, a protocol linking native Bitcoin with onchain services on Sui, such as stablecoin lending. The integration creates verifiable collateralization across both chains, targeting transparency and overcoming trust barriers that have historically affected synthetic Bitcoin instruments.

For Evan, advancing transparent cross-chain tools and fostering true digital asset ownership are pivotal to further adoption. He characterizes these developments as essential steps for sustaining crypto’s original vision in a landscape that increasingly blends with mainstream technology.
