Bitwise Asset Management, a leading digital asset investment firm, has published its 2027 Bitcoin Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions, revealing a significant upward revision to its 2036 price target for Bitcoin. The new base-case target stands at $1,599,766, up from the previous $1.3 million estimate set a year earlier. This projection is built on the assumption of a 34.3% compound annual growth rate based on a reference price of $83,557 as of September 30, 2026. The report also outlines a bear case price of $130,686 and a bull case scenario of $3.67 million for the same period.
Institutional investment outlook and supply constraints
Bitwise argues that its baseline forecast is underpinned by three main factors. First, it expects institutional investors to continue allocating to Bitcoin as a portfolio asset. Second, the network’s new supply remains fixed on a transparent, predetermined issuance schedule. Third, rising global government debt is motivating investors to shift toward assets with capped supply that cannot be created at will.
The firm estimates that institutions managing an estimated $147 trillion could eventually allocate between 1% and 5% of assets into Bitcoin. If realized, this shift could see $1.5 trillion to $7.4 trillion in buying pressure against an annual new coin supply of just $14 billion. Bitwise projects this imbalance will drive prices considerably higher over the next decade.
Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs) in the United States currently hold approximately $108 billion. Major financial institutions, including banks and brokerages, have advanced custody and trading infrastructure, and sovereign wealth funds as well as family offices reportedly increased allocations during the 2026 market downturn.
Proposed regulatory changes, such as the Federal Reserve’s capital proposal to ease bank custody restrictions, could further open up institutional access, pending adoption.
The recent market cycle tested these investment theses. After peaking at $126,080 in October 2025, Bitcoin’s price declined 53.4% to $58,717 by June 30, 2026. Bitwise identified this drawdown as the shallowest in Bitcoin’s history, with previous cycles seeing steeper drops of 77%, 84%, and 86%.
Interpretations of this shift differ. Bitwise anticipates that the four-year cycle pattern will gradually weaken as investor participation broadens. However, firms such as VanEck see a strong alignment with historical halving cycles, while Fidelity and NYDIG suggest possible new price floors, ranging down to $38,000 or $39,000 if past market patterns repeat. Cathie Wood, chief executive of ARK Invest, has claimed the current downturn is nearly complete, but timelines and price targets differ among analysts.

Volatility, correlations, and potential risks
Volatility remains a central component of Bitwise’s forecast model. The firm expects an average annualized volatility of 27.8% through 2036, positioning Bitcoin between its current volatility and longer-term expectations. Grayscale’s research head places recent one-year volatility at 43%, lower than the 10-year average of 64% and below the level of nearly a fifth of S&P 500 companies. However, research from Charles Schwab notes that Bitcoin still experiences sharp price movements even as overall volatility decreases. Deutsche Bank’s analysts describe the declining volatility as an indication of a maturing digital asset market.
Bitwise also reports that Bitcoin’s correlation with gold reached a record 0.58 in September 2026. The firm anticipates this relationship will deepen, reinforcing Bitcoin’s positioning as a store-of-value asset. However, this link could also expose Bitcoin to broader trends in gold markets. Gemini has forecast that at least one country may move part of its gold reserves into Bitcoin in 2026, though this transition has yet to be observed.
Bitwise openly acknowledges several risks to its outlook. The historical track record for both Bitcoin and its associated technologies is limited. The network’s foundational software was created in 2008 and 2009, with institutional adoption only accelerating after the first exchange-traded products arrived in 2024. Forecasts based mainly on past price action involve considerable uncertainty. Regulatory risks also persist, as demonstrated by the failure of the Clarity Act in Congress, which Bitwise traces to concerns about ethics provisions.
Lastly, technological risks such as the advancement of quantum computing and artificial intelligence pose potential threats to the cryptographic systems securing Bitcoin wallets. Bitwise contends that the Bitcoin network will need significant upgrades to maintain its security, especially if users do not migrate funds to new, more secure wallet addresses. Although developers made progress on these concerns in the past year, key challenges remain unresolved.
At press time, Bitcoin trades near $80,500.
Bitwise supports its $1.6 million target with expectations for sustained institutional adoption, predictable supply growth, and macroeconomic dynamics pushing demand for scarce digital assets. The firm sees volatility moderating but recognizes that regulatory and technological uncertainties create ongoing risks for long-term forecasts.
