The Blockchain Gaming Alliance (BGA) published its 2024 report, highlighting significant developments in the blockchain gaming sector over the past year. The report sheds light on the industry’s growth and challenges it faces, providing valuable insights for stakeholders.
Professional Profile Shift in GameFi
The BGA report emphasizes a shift in the backgrounds of professionals entering the blockchain gaming sector. It reveals that a majority of those joining the field now come from the traditional gaming industry rather than a cryptocurrency background.
BGA President Sebastien Borget commented on this trend, stating, “This ratio represents the highest level observed in our surveys over the last four years.” The report indicates that the proportion of professionals with gaming backgrounds has risen to 52.5%, up from 34.2% in 2023. This increase is considered a critical development for fostering creative synergy between blockchain technology and the gaming industry.
Borget noted that these developments would enable the sector to reach a broader audience, highlighting the potential to enhance the popularity of blockchain games.
Diversity and Onboarding Process Improvements
The report also details the challenges faced by the sector, noting that only 17.3% of participants are women. Sebastien Borget addressed the low female representation, stating, “As BGA, we will continue to work to address this gap.” Efforts to increase diversity aim to strengthen the inclusive nature of the GameFi sector.
Onboarding processes emerge as another critical area of concern. However, the report reveals improvements in this area. According to the 2024 survey results, the perception of onboarding difficulty as the main barrier has decreased by 20%. This development facilitates faster and easier adaptation for new users to blockchain games.
Australia’s Rise in Game Development
The contributions of Australian leaders to the sector are highlighted in the report. Corey Wilton, co-founder of Mirai Labs, stated that artificial intelligence has become a crucial tool in game development processes. “AI allows studios to create experiences beyond their imagination,” he added.
Andrew Sorokovsky noted that Web3 technology has revolutionized asset transfer between games. Leah Callon-Butler emphasized the growth of Web3 gaming communities in Southeast Asia, identifying the acceptance of earning income through engaging games in the Philippines.
The GameFi sector has made a strong start into 2024, marked by increasing professional diversity and technological innovations. The performance of the sector in the upcoming period is eagerly awaited.
