Bnb sees 40 percent drop in TPS after quantum encryption

In Brief

  • 🚨 BNB tested quantum-secure encryption and saw its TPS drop by almost 40 percent.

  • The switch made each $BNB transaction signature nearly 40 times larger.

  • 🤯 Key point: Block sizes and network data swelled, slowing transaction times and exposing scaling issues.

Debate over whether quantum computers pose a threat to blockchain security has resurfaced, this time with practical concerns following recent BNB blockchain tests. New trials by BNB developers revealed that quantum-resistant encryption systems dramatically increase blockchain data loads, raising urgent questions for the crypto industry.

What quantum-resistant encryption means

Experts anticipate that quantum computers may soon be capable of cracking today’s standard encryption algorithms. To prepare, researchers are urging blockchain networks to adopt “quantum-resistant encryption.” As one of the world’s leading decentralized blockchains hosting applications and smart contracts, BNB has emerged at the center of this transition, pioneering real-world quantum-secure implementations.

However, quantum-resistant algorithms come with hefty tradeoffs. While a standard BNB transaction signature typically occupies 65 bytes, moving to these new security protocols pushed signature sizes to around 2.4 kilobytes—a nearly forty-fold jump.

Sharp increase in data size impairs network performance

The effect extends beyond individual signatures. A typical transaction that once measured 110 bytes now consumes roughly 2.5 kilobytes. That may seem trivial in isolation, but with hundreds or thousands of transactions per block, total block sizes swelled from 110 KB to upwards of 2 MB. This overload substantially increased overall network data traffic.

Nodes within the blockchain rely on quickly relaying these ever-growing blocks and transactions to one another. As network packets balloon in size, synchronization times lengthen and so does latency. Global blockchains especially risk out-of-sync validator nodes and more frequent delays, threatening seamless updates and overall network efficiency.

Test results indicate that network-wide transaction propagation—previously swift in classical blockchains—slows significantly when quantum-resistant encryption is introduced. Delays in spreading transactions raise the potential for congestion, temporary chain splits, and declining operational efficiency, according to the testers.

Transaction capacity almost halves

The hit to raw processing power is especially stark. In BNB’s experiments, the network that normally handled 4,973 transactions per second (TPS) managed just 2,997 TPS under quantum-secure signatures. This finding underscores a nearly 40 percent drop in overall capacity—the network could now process only about half as many transactions per second as before.

The results underscore that boosting security alone is not enough for next-generation blockchains. Successful quantum migration will demand network upgrades, improved data compression, and the adoption of more efficient methods for bundling digital signatures into blocks.

What lies ahead for the blockchain sector?

Broader infrastructure challenges loom as revealed by these tests. Beyond just cryptography, the findings point to broader issues from architecture design to network protocols and to crucial questions around balancing decentralization with throughput. The quantum era may force the entire industry to revisit foundational blockchain assumptions.

BNB’s developer team has pointed out that the sector still has time before quantum computers become a real threat. Even so, they emphasize the need to start investing in innovations that will support much higher transaction volumes in the medium term.
