BNY Mellon, one of the world’s largest asset servicing firms, is preparing to introduce a blockchain-based digital transfer agency designed to enhance the way fund transactions and ownership are recorded. This new system will initially encompass around $8.6 trillion in assets spread across 7.6 million investor accounts, with early adoption expected by asset management giants Baillie Gifford, BlackRock, and BNY’s Dreyfus arm.

Hybrid approach blends blockchain with traditional systems

Rather than overhauling its established recordkeeping methods, BNY Mellon will implement a system that mirrors existing books and records onto blockchain infrastructure. By maintaining parallel records, the initiative ensures that longstanding financial processes, which already handle vast amounts of regulated transactions, remain intact while benefiting from blockchain’s transparency and efficiency.

This approach reflects a growing trend towards tokenized funds, where blockchain connectivity is layered into current financial systems instead of fully replacing them. Institutions are able to preserve the reliability and compliance of core infrastructure while experimenting with new technology that could streamline reconciliation, reporting, and investor communications.

Connecting traditional and tokenized financial markets

The primary impact of BNY Mellon’s project lies in creating a bridge between conventional financial market infrastructure and blockchain-enabled assets. Through ongoing research, BNY Mellon has pointed to hybrid models where synchronization between on-chain and off-chain records becomes part of everyday fund administration, preventing discrepancies and increasing operational resilience.

By leveraging its central position in fund services, BNY Mellon aims for broad industry influence. The project could pave the way for blockchain technology to integrate more broadly into mainstream investment products, provided the rollout does not introduce extra compliance requirements or hinder regulatory reporting. The success of the initiative may influence whether blockchain moves beyond specialized tokenized offerings to underpin some of the largest and most widely used global funds.

BNY Mellon’s research identifies a future where routine fund administration involves reconciliation between blockchain and traditional records, supporting strong compliance while extending the benefits of distributed ledger technology to regulated finance.
