Singapore expansion strategy

The company began operations at its new office at One Raffles Quay, a prominent business address in Singapore’s central financial district. Hassan Ahmed, Coinbase’s country director for Singapore, said the expansion will focus on hiring engineers, customer service professionals, relationship management staff, and institutional sales representatives. The goal is to better serve both individual and institutional clients in the city-state.

Hassan Ahmed described Singapore as an increasingly strategic hub for cryptocurrency innovation, highlighting the country’s forward-looking regulatory environment and growing pool of digital asset talent.

Ahmed emphasized that regulatory clarity and a supportive business environment continue to attract major digital asset companies to Singapore.

Regulatory developments and licensing

In October 2023, Coinbase secured a major payment institution license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), the nation’s central bank. This license enables the exchange to extend digital asset services, including cryptocurrency trading and payments, to Singaporean individuals and institutional investors.

Singapore regulates digital payment token service providers through a framework managed by the MAS. As of this week, the MAS directory lists 38 firms authorized to operate in the country.

The MAS raised the bar for licensing criteria in 2025, setting stricter requirements that prompted many unlicensed businesses to exit the Singapore market. These measures are designed to strengthen consumer protections and uphold the industry’s integrity.

Singapore’s role in the crypto sector

Singapore has positioned itself as a key global hub for digital assets, drawing overseas companies thanks to its robust regulatory framework and proactive policymaking. The country’s focus on fostering innovation while maintaining stringent oversight sets it apart in the evolving cryptocurrency landscape.

Coinbase’s expansion comes as Singapore continues to reinforce its status as a leading location for crypto businesses in Asia, supporting both startups and multinational digital asset firms.

Regulatory support and a skilled workforce are driving an influx of international firms into Singapore’s crypto ecosystem, according to industry leaders.
