Cryptocurrencies are still a new field, and governments continue to fight the crimes within this space. The crypto industry, long not taken seriously, has left institutional workers floundering like fish out of water due to their lack of development in this area. ZachXBT, however, has been one of the best detectives in crypto for years.
ZachXBT and the USA
Criminals exist in every field, and crypto is no exception. Hacks, robberies, scams, and much more have become commonplace over the years. Although governments are belatedly catching up to criminals, there are names that outpace public officials, FBI, and IRS (Internal Revenue Service) agents.
ZachXBT is one such individual who, despite not working full-time for any government, has achieved significant success in uncovering perpetrators in many major attacks. In many cases seen in the USA, references have been made to his publicly shared reports in the charges.
Exposes Harassing Agent
Famous crypto detective ZachXBT mentioned in a recent post about emails that he now considers to be harassment. Blockchain researcher ZachXBT shared the emails from an agent of the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Criminal Investigation (CI) Division who had sought his help in blockchain investigations, fully exposing the agent.
ZachXBT says he is willing to help victims and support law enforcement with necessary information, but he has started to see things that cross the line.
“They contacted me with personal emails using private data and sent mail when my public communication methods were ready.”
The IRS-CI special agent’s email asking for ZachXBT’s help praises the crypto detective. However, the issue is that the agent, not understanding the work, is pleading for help with teary eyes.
“I’ve been an IRS-CI special agent for a while, but I’m quite new to the crypto/cyber arena and want to stand out and do good work. What do you think I should be looking at, which tools? Can you give me some ideas?”
Such an email is unacceptable for an institution like the IRS and is quite embarrassing. On the other hand, it shows just how pitiful some of the agents who should be chasing criminals are. Perhaps in a few days, we might see mocking memes or even meme coins about the mentioned agent or the IRS.
The IRS, striving to develop official collaborations, is working with leading companies in the sector. Last May, IRS-CI Chief Jim Lee had said that the partnership with blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis had become invaluable.
