DeFi Platforms Shift Focus from Locked Value to Asset Security

In Brief

  • Debate grows over DeFi’s reliance on Total Value Locked as the main metric.

  • New focus turns to how much capital is actively protected within protocols.

  • Industry consensus is shifting towards safer, more resilient DeFi platforms.

In recent years, decentralized finance (DeFi) has seen a surge in both stablecoin transactions and the tokenization of real-world assets. As these activities gain momentum, debates have intensified over the core metrics used to assess DeFi’s performance. According to data firm Visa, the global stablecoin transaction volume jumped from $3.5 trillion in 2023 to $5.5 trillion in the past year. This dramatic growth signals that stablecoins are no longer confined to a niche audience, but have become an essential building block in the mainstream crypto ecosystem.

Growing Criticism of Total Value Locked (TVL)

Total Value Locked, or TVL, has long been the benchmark for evaluating DeFi protocols. In the early days, TVL offered a quick and straightforward way to monitor the flow of assets onto blockchains. However, experts are increasingly critical of TVL’s limitations: while it measures the amount of capital held in a protocol, it fails to account for how securely that capital is safeguarded within the system.

A protocol might boast a high TVL, but if it suffers from security vulnerabilities or has centralized governance, the assets inside remain at risk. TVL, by design, only reflects the quantity of deposited assets—it provides no indication of whether those assets are adequately protected. This flaw has become glaringly clear in the wake of high-profile hacks, where TVL has evaporated almost overnight. For instance, after the Ronin bridge hack, the platform’s locked capital plummeted from around $1.2 billion to below $15 million within a short span.

Emergence of the “Protected Capital” Metric

As DeFi becomes more intertwined with mainstream finance, simply tracking asset inflows is no longer sufficient. Industry voices increasingly argue that protocols should not only measure how much capital is held, but also report how much of it is insured or shielded by robust security mechanisms. This would provide a clearer view of risk exposure, especially as institutional engagement grows.

Enter the concept of Total Value Covered (TVC), which quantifies the portion of assets explicitly protected by formal risk transfer mechanisms. Unlike TVL, TVC indicates not just the presence of capital, but how much is proactively shielded. This transparency could prove crucial for assessing a protocol’s true risk profile.

TVC can help serious capital allocators assess not only the amount of assets on a platform, but also the extent to which those assets are safeguarded against adverse scenarios.

Competition May Pivot Towards Asset Protection

Many DeFi protocols currently compete to attract the highest deposits and generate impressive yields. However, a shift in focus from TVL to TVC could reshape industry dynamics. In the coming period, protocols prioritizing resilience, robust risk management, and enhanced security may outpace those fixated solely on total locked value. This would set the stage for competition based on asset protection, rather than raw deposit numbers.

Such a transition is vital if DeFi is to fulfill its potential as a secure alternative for both institutional and retail users. Going forward, evaluations of protocol performance are likely to place increasing emphasis on not just accumulated assets, but also their degree of protection against emerging threats.
