What is Cryptography?
Cryptography is the art of securing communication by transforming data into an incomprehensible format. Its primary goal is to ensure that information can only be read by authorized individuals. This process employs encryption algorithms, keys, and mathematical operations.
Cryptography has two fundamental components: encryption and decryption. Encryption converts readable data (plaintext) into a scrambled format (ciphertext), while decryption reverses this process, restoring the original data. Modern Types of Cryptography
Today, cryptography is divided into symmetric and asymmetric encryption, each with its unique advantages and applications. In symmetric encryption, the same key is used for both encrypting and decrypting data. Popular examples include AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) and DES (Data Encryption Standard), particularly favored for their speed with large data sets. However, the security of the communication channels becomes critical due to the need for secure key sharing.
On the other hand, asymmetric encryption utilizes a pair of keys: a public key shared with everyone and a private key kept secret by the owner. Pioneering algorithms in this area include RSA and ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography), commonly used in online banking and digital signatures.
