$2,322 developers have announced the launch of a new test network called Hoodi, ahead of the anticipated Pectra update. This test network, set to be activated on March 17 by the Ethereum Foundation developers, is designed for long-term usage. Hoodi comes in response to recent issues encountered with the Holesky and Sepolia test networks and is expected to pave the way for the Pectra update planned for the Ethereum mainnet by the end of April.
What Issues Will the Hoodi Test Network Address?
The primary motivation for implementing Hoodi was to resolve transaction completion loss issues experienced in the Holesky test network. The Holesky network was rendered temporarily unusable due to a configuration error about two weeks ago. Although the network was reactivated shortly after, it failed to fulfill many functions intended for research purposes.
Hoodi will provide Ethereum developers with the opportunity to conduct important technical tests, such as “validator exits,” which were hindered by congestion in the Holesky network.
What Benefits Will the Pectra Update Bring to Ethereum?
The eagerly awaited Pectra update aims to significantly enhance Ethereum’s scalability and usability. It stands out by increasing the “blob” transaction capacity, which will reduce data access costs for Layer 2 networks. Additionally, staking limits will be raised considerably to enable more users to participate in staking.
Another critical feature of the update will be account abstraction, which will greatly enhance the functionality of smart contracts and wallets. The planned date for the application of Pectra on the Ethereum mainnet is set for April 25, approximately 30 days after the Hoodi test network applications.
