Bitcoin $77,710 has laid the foundation for cryptocurrencies, experiencing remarkable growth over the years. Despite witnessing major crashes in four-year cycles, Bitcoin has consistently managed to establish new highs. Today, its most significant challenge is the decrease in price from six-figure levels to $95,000. The vital question arises: can Ethereum $2,317 surpass it?

Can Ethereum Overtake Bitcoin?

Cathie Wood, the founder and CEO of Ark Invest, demonstrates a strong interest in alternative assets within this domain. Her portfolio contains various assets beyond Bitcoin, including substantial investments in crypto-related stocks. Despite this, Cathie views Bitcoin as pure and centralized, likening it to refined gold in the crypto world.

While Bitcoin stands at the forefront of decentralized crypto assets, Ethereum holds a similar central position within its sphere. Known as the “computer of the internet,” Ethereum delivers significant infrastructure for the DeFi ecosystem. Numerous major banks, crypto protocols, and even governmental organizations are experimenting with Ethereum or have already launched functioning applications on it. This trend suggests that there is much more to come in the future.

Wood’s perspective on Ethereum and Bitcoin is that they are distinctly different entities. She questions whether Ethereum can overtake Bitcoin, while recognizing frustrations over Layer2 solutions drawing significant fees and revenues but notes the potential of these solutions to enhance Ethereum’s significance due to inter-competition.

The Path Forward for Ethereum

Tom Lee initiated an Ethereum reserve company in June, accumulating billions of dollars of ETH. Determined to become the strategy’s ETH version, he believes Ethereum will surpass Bitcoin significantly. Lee forecasts Bitcoin reaching $200,000 by year-end and $1 million in the long term, but views Ethereum as the prime macro investment in the next 10-15 years.

There are several reasons for this, summarized as follows:

  • Wall Street is basing foundational elements on blockchain. Crypto-linked products, new applications, and integrations have become commonplace. Ethereum is at the center of this, with Lee believing the “altcoin king” will benefit primarily.
  • Lee’s hypothesis extends to artificial intelligence layering within the Ethereum ecosystem, banking on its vast potential.
  • He predicts the tokenization sector, like AI, will primarily utilize Ethereum, with its rising stablecoin and RWA growth augmenting Ethereum fee income, propelling ETH’s advancement.
  • If Bitcoin is digital gold, Lee argues Ethereum is digital oil, underscoring Ethereum’s prevalent infrastructure role powering the blockchain economy.
  • Due to staking, Lee anticipates faster growth for ETH reserve companies, with the largest being his own.

Lee argues that Ethereum will reach $60,000 in the next five years.
