EOF will bring significant conveniences, especially for those developing decentralized applications in programming languages like Solidity and Vyper. The update aims to make Ethereum’s current EVM environment more flexible and user-friendly. However, the changes introduced by EOF are quite delicate and carry the risk of breaking existing smart contracts. Therefore, developers will offer an option allowing application developers to choose the old version while rolling out the new EVM version.
Parithosh Jayanthi from the Ethereum Foundation stated that EOF is one of the biggest changes on the EVM, and the update will lay the groundwork for future updates to the EVM. EOF is also seen as an important step to strengthen Ethereum’s leading position in the industry. Many Layer-1 Blockchain networks have become compatible with EVM, adopting Ethereum’s technology standards.
Warnings About the Risks of the Update
EOF brings some risks along with the innovations. Some developers are concerned that the update could cause unexpected issues in the network. Marius Van Der Wijden, one of the prominent critics of the update, stated that EOF should be run alongside the existing EVM, which could make maintaining two different EVM versions challenging. Van Der Wijden also warned that the newly added verification processes could lead to errors.
However, most core developers see the benefits of EOF to the Ethereum ecosystem outweighing the risks. Independent developer Danno Ferrin, who stated that EOF is ready for implementation and will solve many technical issues, argued that the new features should either be implemented now or shelved entirely.
