Ethereum targets quantum-resistant upgrade for layer 1 by December 2029

In Brief

  • 🚨 Ethereum Foundation sets December 2029 for full quantum-resistance on layer 1.

  • 🛡️ Developers plan to upgrade all cryptographic systems before quantum computers emerge.

  • 🔄 The roadmap starts with the Glamsterdam upgrade and looks to Hegotá as a key step.

  • 📊 Quantum-resistant security is planned for all $ETH network components by the target date.

The Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol Cluster has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap aiming to make Ethereum’s base layer fully quantum-resistant by December 2029. This plan addresses concerns about potential advancements in quantum computing that could challenge the security of existing blockchain cryptography.

Quantum computing and blockchain security

The Foundation’s initiative targets all critical components of Ethereum layer 1, covering execution, consensus, and data. Ethereum’s team acknowledges that quantum computers capable of compromising current cryptographic systems might emerge as soon as 2030, though some experts believe this timeline could be further out.

Acting proactively, Ethereum developers have set an ambitious deadline to complete quantum-proofing before the risk becomes immediate. In a statement, the Protocol Cluster stressed the importance of early preparation rather than waiting for an imminent threat.

“Q-day cannot be scheduled, so we have assigned ourselves a self-imposed deadline,” the Protocol Cluster explained.

The targeted completion date of December 2029 is described as virtually non-negotiable until at least January 2027, when a reassessment of quantum computing developments is planned. A sufficiently advanced quantum computer poses risks as it could potentially break the cryptographic protections that blockchains use to secure transactions and maintain integrity.

Mini dictionary: Quantum-Resistance, or post-quantum cryptography, refers to cryptographic algorithms believed to be secure against quantum computer attacks. These systems are designed to replace classic cryptography, like elliptic curve signatures, that quantum computers could potentially breach.

Roadmap to post-quantum Ethereum

The Ethereum Foundation’s plan involves transitioning all critical network functionalities to post-quantum signature schemes. These updates will impact transaction authentication, consensus protocols, and data availability mechanisms across the protocol’s infrastructure.

A detailed timeline outlines two potential upgrade paths. The first would see Ethereum achieving full post-quantum security after five consecutive hard forks following the planned Glamsterdam upgrade scheduled for December 2026. Alternatively, a slower approach would bring quantum-resistance through incremental upgrades at an annual cadence.

MilestoneEstimated DateDescription
Glamsterdam UpgradeDecember 2026Major update, precursor to quantum-resistance work
Post-Quantum ReadinessDecember 2029Target for full quantum-resistant base layer
Progress AssessmentJanuary 2027Deadline for reassessing quantum developments

Future upgrades: Hegotá and beyond

Development efforts on Ethereum’s next major upgrade, Hegotá, are already underway. The Foundation has identified this update as a foundational requirement for achieving comprehensive quantum-resistance. Hegotá will follow Glamsterdam in the upgrade sequence, helping lay the groundwork for further cryptographic enhancements.

The Protocol Cluster’s announcement draws attention to the evolving landscape facing blockchain developers as they anticipate the need for resilience against new technological threats.

Ethereum developers are preparing to transition to post-quantum signature schemes across transaction, consensus, and data systems well before quantum computers become a practical threat.
