Ethereum to enable stablecoin gas payments with 2027 Hegotá upgrade

In Brief

  • 🚀 Ethereum will let users pay gas fees with stablecoins after the 2027 Hegotá upgrade.

  • 🪙 Wallets without ETH can send transactions as apps or other wallets cover fees and accept stablecoins in return.

  • 🔐 The Frame Transactions system will bundle token approvals and automatically revoke them if swaps fail.

  • 📅 The upgrade supports $ETH’s post-quantum security plan, aiming for a rollout by late 2029.

Ethereum core developers have approved the inclusion of Frame Transactions, formalized as EIP-8141, in the forthcoming Hegotá protocol upgrade scheduled for 2027. This advancement is set to allow users to pay network transaction fees without the need to hold ETH in their wallets.

Stablecoin gas payments and third-party sponsorship

EIP-8141 targets a longstanding pain point for Ethereum users: the inability to send tokens if a wallet lacks ETH, even when it holds ample stablecoins. Under the new system, an app or another wallet can sponsor a user’s transaction by paying the network’s ETH fee up front. The user can then reimburse the sponsor in stablecoins, streamlining the experience for those who do not wish to maintain ETH balances.

This approach does not alter the underlying protocol requirement for ETH as network gas. Ethereum’s infrastructure will continue to collect fees exclusively in ETH, while the abstraction layer enables alternative assets to cover these costs at the user level.

Currently, similar functionality exists only through external relayers or third-party wallet services, which facilitate token transfers by temporarily covering gas costs for users. With Frame Transactions, this capability will be embedded directly into Ethereum’s core transaction logic.

Mini dictionary: Frame Transactions, also known as EIP-8141, introduce a modular system on Ethereum enabling separate management of authorization, gas fee payments, and execution within one transaction structure. This lets third parties sponsor fees and broadens support for stablecoin use in gas payments.

Improvements to transaction security and usability

The Frame Transactions design allows multiple operations to be bundled together and executed atomically. For instance, a typical token swap on a decentralized exchange currently requires two steps: approving the transaction and then performing the swap. If the swap fails, the token approval often remains active, creating a potential vulnerability. With Frame Transactions, approvals are automatically revoked if the linked operation fails, improving user safety.

Additionally, Frame Transactions will simplify account management. Users can update authentication parameters or rotate cryptographic keys without moving assets between addresses—a significant advancement for security, especially as cryptography evolves.

Frame Transactions let wallets pay network fees for users and accept stablecoin reimbursement, removing the current barrier that prevents wallets without ETH from making token transfers.

Timeline and quantum-resistance goals

The Hegotá upgrade is expected to arrive after Glamsterdam, which developers have planned for December 2026. Work on Hegotá may begin later that year, with full deployment targeted for 2027. Over 60 researchers and engineers evaluated 62 possible improvement proposals for Hegotá, with Frame Transactions categorized as a must-have feature at the core protocol level.

Frame Transactions also play a role in Ethereum’s efforts to achieve post-quantum security by December 2029. By supporting seamless changes to signature schemes, Frame Transactions will allow Ethereum to upgrade its cryptography without requiring separate asset migrations or disruptive hard forks.

The technical specifics of EIP-8141 remain under discussion, and the proposal is not yet active on Ethereum’s mainnet. Framework details could be updated as preparation for the Hegotá upgrade continues.

Vitalik Buterin, one of the ten credited contributors to EIP-8141, indicated that development on Frame Transactions has accelerated significantly in recent months.
