David Schwartz, co-creator of the XRP Ledger and former Chief Technology Officer at Ripple, stated that XRP has the potential to overtake Bitcoin in market capitalization, provided it grows more rapidly as the digital asset sector expands.
Schwartz discusses XRP’s potential path
Schwartz appeared in a recent Digital Perspectives video, where he addressed whether there is a realistic pathway for XRP to surpass Bitcoin’s market cap in the future. Rather than suggesting this scenario would require Bitcoin to decline, Schwartz highlighted the importance of XRP outpacing Bitcoin as the crypto market develops.
When asked directly if XRP might eventually overtake Bitcoin, Schwartz answered that he believes it is possible. He explained that XRP could achieve this position not by Bitcoin losing value, but by expanding at a faster rate than its main competitor.
In Schwartz’s view, “It wouldn’t happen from Bitcoin shrinking. It would happen from XRP growing faster than Bitcoin.”
The remarks quickly became central to the discussion, with Digital Perspectives emphasizing Schwartz’s perspective as a significant viewpoint on future market dynamics.
Growth driven by technology and market expansion
Rather than focusing on a zero-sum outcome among top cryptocurrencies, Schwartz pointed to the potential for simultaneous growth within the digital asset space. He argued that most leading cryptocurrencies could deliver substantial gains as the sector matures, even if a few may fall out of favor.
Schwartz attributed XRP’s potential advantage to the technical capabilities of the XRP Ledger, including speed and advanced features that may not be supported on the Bitcoin network. In his comments, he suggested that the XRP Ledger could capture more value if market participants show increased interest in its functionality.
Schwartz noted, “The XRP Ledger gets more of that growth because of its higher functionality and/or higher speed and/or people are interested in features that Bitcoin can’t support.”
In a rapidly evolving environment, where regulatory decisions or new altcoin listings can trigger significant shifts within seconds, many investors are seeking unified platforms for market monitoring. As a result, several traders are moving towards privacy-focused solutions like CryptoAppsy, which combine real-time charts, tailored news feeds, price alerts, and macroeconomic data without requiring an account. This consolidation helps streamline trading decisions and reduces the friction caused by juggling separate applications.
XRP’s market cap gap and what it would take to bridge it
Currently, Bitcoin’s market capitalization stands around $1.54 trillion, while XRP’s valuation is approximately 18 times smaller. For XRP to match Bitcoin’s market cap at current supply levels, it would need to add roughly $1.49 trillion, which would position the token near the $24.50 range.
These calculations, however, are derived from present data and do not reflect official price targets set by Schwartz. Instead, he focused on the overall conditions required for such a transition, emphasizing that only a much larger total crypto market would create the environment for XRP to outpace Bitcoin.
He explained that this scenario depends on digital assets achieving major success across the board, not on Bitcoin losing its existing value. Under such circumstances, Schwartz believes XRP and other major assets could grow substantially together, with the possibility of XRP taking the lead if its innovations deliver a stronger market position.
