The collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX was one of the hottest topics in the crypto world in 2022. After the bankruptcy, the crypto sector experienced turmoil, affecting the prices of cryptocurrencies and resulting in significant losses for investors. Subsequently, lawsuits were filed against the FTX management, and former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried was found guilty of seven charges. As the sentencing date approaches, significant moves have come from SBF’s family and friends.

Letters Sent to the Presiding Judge

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried has recently been in the news facing the risk of conviction on charges. However, today saw an important development. SBF’s family and friends have sent letters to the judge, requesting leniency. These letters emphasize Bankman-Fried’s psychiatric condition and the potential effects of a prison sentence on him.

Barbara Fried, Bankman-Fried’s mother and a Stanford Law Professor, described her son’s behaviors associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), stating he experienced emotional difficulties and had trouble communicating. She also emphasized that he struggled with giving normal responses and that instead of being isolated, he needed support.

Psychiatrist George Lerner supported Barbara’s statements, noting that Bankman-Fried’s psychiatric conditions could be misinterpreted. He stressed that his patient was grappling with mental challenges rather than greed, which could affect his daily functions.

Emphasis on Contributions to Society

Bankman-Fried’s father Joseph Bankman and brother Gabriel also shared similar sentiments. They too highlighted that Bankman-Fried struggled with social skills and that imprisonment could be physically and mentally harmful.

Bankman-Fried’s lawyers, considering his philanthropic activities, requested a lighter sentence. Regarding the charges, it is known that the founder faced accusations such as fraud and conspiracy. However, the defense team also insisted that Bankman-Fried’s contributions to society should not be overlooked and that the sentence should be fair.

At this point, Sam Bankman-Fried’s family and close circle are asking the judge to consider his special circumstances and make a lenient decision. These letters underscore that Bankman-Fried is battling not only his crimes but also the social and personal challenges behind him. However, none of this changes the fact that SBF has been found guilty. The sentence can certainly be mitigated. But the events that have transpired are clear, and this is best known by cryptocurrency investors.
