The Federal Reserve is set to keep interest rates unchanged at its October 27–28 policy meeting, according to a vast majority of economists polled by Reuters. This pause comes as inflation readings remain elevated, putting pressure on the central bank’s strategy, and shaping expectations for the remainder of the year.

Fed Rate Decision: October Pause Looks Increasingly Likely

In a Reuters survey conducted between October 16 and 20, 94 out of 100 economists predicted that the Federal Reserve will maintain its benchmark rate at 3.75% to 4.00% during this month’s meeting. This consensus aligns with the broader market expectation that a holding pattern is likely, especially following the 25 basis point increase implemented in September—its first since 2023.

Inflation remains stubbornly above the Fed’s 2% target. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for September showed an annual rise of 3.7%, up from August’s 3.4%. Monthly inflation climbed 0.6%, driven primarily by higher energy costs. Producer price data for September also pointed to substantial cost pressures, rising 6.3% year-on-year and suggesting that businesses face growing input expenses.

Federal Reserve officials, including New York Fed President John Williams, have recognized that additional tightening may be necessary. However, Williams signaled little urgency for immediate action, reflecting a preference to assess further economic data before considering another rate hike.

With the October decision arriving days before the US midterms, speculation about political influence persists, but the Fed has continued to emphasize its mandate remains focused on inflation and employment, not electoral outcomes.

December Rate Hike Expectations Reach Unanimous Consensus

Looking ahead, all 100 economists surveyed now anticipate the Federal Reserve will raise rates again at its December 8–9 meeting. This marks a sharp shift from the previous survey, where fewer than half expected a December increase. Close to 60% of respondents believe the policy rate will peak between 4.00% and 4.25%, while others see room for further tightening.

The firm consensus reflects mounting concern that inflation may persist longer than initially forecast, especially as energy and transportation costs climb. Higher oil prices have played a significant role, fueling fears of broader inflationary pressures across the economy. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has pointed to the current surge in AI-related investments, noting that it may temporarily boost demand for capital, electricity, and infrastructure before expected productivity gains offset these initial impacts.

The effects of rising rates go beyond the central bank’s policy goals. Higher rates tend to enhance the appeal of interest-bearing investments and can dampen asset valuations, particularly with Treasury yields already at elevated levels.

For economists and market participants, the focus now moves to whether new inflation data will reinforce expectations for a December rate hike or prompt a rethink of monetary policy outlooks.

What the Fed’s Next Decision Means for Bitcoin and Stocks

Market reaction may hinge less on the anticipated October pause and more on forward-looking commentary from the Fed regarding December. For Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, expectations of further rate hikes can create persistent headwinds by supporting bond yields and weighing on speculative assets.

Analysts monitoring recent Bitcoin price trends see the upcoming Fed decision as a potential catalyst for renewed volatility, especially as investors digest both inflation data and the central bank’s policy signals. The interplay of rising Treasury yields and unchanged short-term rates underscores complex conditions for both digital and traditional assets.

Navigating this period of heightened uncertainty, some traders emphasize the importance of having immediate access to comprehensive market insights. In a market where a single Fed decision or a sudden altcoin listing can change everything in seconds, jumping between different apps for charts, news, and portfolio tracking is costing investors money. Smart traders are now utilizing privacy-first tools like CryptoAppsy to consolidate everything. Without even the hassle of creating an account, you get real-time charts, smart price alerts, coin-specific news, and critical macro data all on one screen.

Currently, the consensus points toward a policy pause for October. Whether inflation data in the coming weeks will cement expectations for a December hike remains a critical focus for economists and investors alike.
