FIFA has announced a new blockchain platform aimed at enhancing NFT-based fan experiences. The platform, named “FIFA Collect,” will transition from its current Algorand network to this new platform, underlining its Ethereum $2,538-compatible infrastructure. This shift promises increased scalability, improved wallet integration, and enhanced performance. Although users won’t incur any costs during this transition, they need to complete certain actions in a timely manner.
Transition from Algorand to EVM-Based System
According to FIFA’s official statement, the transition process will begin on May 20, 2025. Post this date, FIFA Collect NFTs will be automatically transferred to the new platform. Owners will be able to access their collections through existing accounts. However, some habitual modifications are necessary due to technical changes. Notably, Algorand-based wallets like Defly and Pera will no longer be supported. Users are encouraged to switch to Ethereum-compatible (EVM) wallets such as MetaMask.
The new platform will offer NFT holders broader transaction options. FIFA officials assert this system, integrated with the Ethereum ecosystem, will enhance user experience in the long run. During the transition, the platform might be offline for approximately 12 hours, with prior notice given to users. FIFA will release guidelines to inform fans and ensure a smooth process.
Reimport Requirement and Technical Details
While NFTs will be automatically moved to the new platform, certain collections may require a “reimport” process. This feature will be temporarily enabled, and users must adhere to the deadline associated with this process. If reimport is not completed, users will need to contact the support team for assistance with the affected collections. FIFA emphasizes users should be diligent about these dates.
Additionally, a different approach is planned for users transacting in USDC. While spending USDC will be possible before the transition, withdrawals can only occur once the transition is complete. Despite being temporary, these technical limitations might impact planning. FIFA assures support through informative messages during these temporary conditions.
The new Ethereum-compatible architecture serves as a strong example of the industry’s growing shift toward EVM standards. With an increase in technical capacity and broader wallet support, FIFA advances its NFT vision. These innovations are anticipated to bolster interactions between cryptocurrency users and the platform.
