Franklin Templeton, an investment management giant overseeing $1.8 trillion in assets, has filed updated documents with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to introduce two innovative exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on the Nasdaq. The move marks a significant step for traditional finance as it seeks to integrate cryptocurrency mechanisms into mainstream investment products.
Innovative ETF Structure Fuses US Equities and Bitcoin
The proposed products—Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FBEQ) and Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FIBT)—aim to deliver traditional US stock market exposure, while using a structured dividend reinvestment approach to incrementally increase Bitcoin positions over time.
Unlike typical spot Bitcoin ETFs, both FBEQ and FIBT will use rules-based indices that capture dividends paid by underlying US equities and methodically channel that cash flow into Bitcoin purchases. Every time a portfolio stock pays a regular or special dividend, the corresponding value will be allocated to Bitcoin at the market open immediately after the ex-dividend date.
At inception, each ETF portfolio will comprise 95% US equities and 5% Bitcoin. Total exposure to Bitcoin is capped at 20%, providing a measure of risk management. During quarterly rebalance cycles, if the Bitcoin component exceeds 5% due to price appreciation, it is reduced to 4.5%.
FBEQ is set to track a benchmark index of the 500 largest US companies, offering investors diversified large-cap exposure at an annual operating expense of 0.09%.
In contrast, FIBT will focus on the top 100 Nasdaq-listed growth businesses, excluding financial firms, with a higher annual fee of 0.19%.
| ETF | Equity Focus | Annual Expense Ratio | Bitcoin Allocation Target |
|---|---|---|---|
| FBEQ | 500 largest US companies | 0.09% | 5% (capped at 20%) |
| FIBT | 100 top Nasdaq growth companies (ex. financials) | 0.19% | 5% (capped at 20%) |
The ETFs will not always hold physical Bitcoin directly. The filings specify that Bitcoin exposure may be achieved through exchange-traded products, futures, options, or depositary receipts, instead of spot assets.
Both ETF portfolios will maintain a 95% allocation to US equities and a 5% initial allocation to Bitcoin. Dividend payments will be systematically converted into additional Bitcoin exposure, while total Bitcoin holdings are restricted to a maximum of 20% to ensure diversification and manage risk.
Franklin Templeton’s prospectus signals that the earliest expected effective date for the ETFs is October 27, 2026. Despite this timeline, the products cannot launch publicly until all regulatory clearances are finalized.
Franklin Templeton’s Ongoing Push Into Digital Assets
As an asset manager established in 1947, Franklin Templeton has sought to bridge traditional and digital assets in recent years. The firm’s series of regulatory filings continue a trend among leading financial institutions aiming to position new hybrid investment vehicles at the intersection of established markets and emerging blockchain technology.
Through these proposed ETFs, Franklin Templeton is advancing the concept of integrating Bitcoin exposure into mainstream US equity strategies via regular reinvestment of dividends.
Mini dictionary: DRIP (Dividend Reinvestment Plan): A strategy where dividends paid by stocks are automatically reinvested to purchase additional shares or other assets, in this case Bitcoin, instead of being distributed as cash to investors.
Market observers report that interest in hybrid developments is growing, as traditional institutions explore new ways to satisfy customer demand for cryptocurrency exposure within regulated structures.
