A couple in Rion-des-Landes, southwestern France, was abducted from their home in the early hours of August 11 by armed intruders demanding access to their Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The attack occurred around 4 a.m., when multiple perpetrators reportedly forced entry into the property, threatened the residents, and demanded the disclosure of digital asset details.

Violent Kidnapping and Rescue Operations

After forcibly removing the residents, the assailants transported them separately to undisclosed locations. The male victim was later found near Solférino, approximately 20 kilometers away from the initial crime scene. He had been left without clothing and showed signs of multiple injuries, according to sources briefed on the incident. Authorities have not disclosed whether he required hospital treatment or the extent of his injuries.

The female victim was located inside a motor vehicle in a different administrative department. Officials did not share her exact location, physical condition, or specifics on the police operation that led to her recovery.

Police have withheld all details about the identities, professions, and cryptocurrency holdings of both victims. It remains unclear whether they were publicly known to have connections to the digital asset industry or if their holdings were widely reported before the incident.

Law enforcement responded quickly, mobilizing significant resources to hunt for the suspects and deploying roadblocks between Rion-des-Landes and Lesperon. Forensic teams visited the victims’ residence the day after the attack to collect evidence, including fingerprints and other forensic data.

Suspect Detentions and Ongoing Investigation

Authorities confirmed that two suspects were apprehended in connection with the abduction. The names, ages, and involvement levels of the individuals remain undisclosed, as do any charges that may be pending. Their detention status has not been formally updated.

The investigation is under the jurisdiction of Bordeaux’s specialized prosecutors and France’s National Anti-Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office. Officials have not confirmed whether any cryptocurrencies were actually transferred or if the attackers succeeded in obtaining access to the digital wallets.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported that France recorded 77 violent crimes linked to cryptocurrency in 2026, a clear rise from 45 in 2025, and approximately 200 suspects have been detained in connection with these incidents.

Rise in Crypto-Related Attacks and Changing Strategies

Chainalysis identified 30 violent, crypto-related incidents in France during the first half of 2026, already surpassing the 19 cases tracked throughout all of 2025. Worldwide, attackers obtained over $30 million through physical confrontations in just the first six months of 2026. Success rates for these criminal attempts have declined to 26% in 2026, compared with 49% in the previous year.

Residential break-ins accounted for 37% of crypto-related attacks in the first half of 2026, up from 14% the year before. Over 40% of attacks targeted family or business partners of crypto holders, not the holders themselves, often using compromised personal information for targeting strategies.

Chainalysis cited recent data leaks as a major risk factor. The company pointed to a 2024 breach of French tax records and a January incident involving Waltio, a cryptocurrency tax services provider, which exposed the information of around 50,000 users.

The evolution of digital markets has introduced new dynamics to asset security. While traditional brokers dominate older finance models, a migration is unfolding as Wall Street moves into Web3. Investors increasingly use platforms such as 1stepSwap to directly hold tokenized shares of US equities, gold, and silver within their crypto wallets, bypassing intermediary agents entirely and automatically sourcing optimal market prices for real-world assets within seconds.

“Residential intrusions now make up a significant portion of crypto-related crimes, with many criminals relying on stolen tax documents and leaks from cryptocurrency services to target victims,” research by Chainalysis noted.
