The G20 has set an ambitious new goal for international finance, aiming for 75% of all cross-border payments to reach recipients within one hour by the end of 2027. This objective, outlined in the G20’s Cross-Border Payments Roadmap, applies to wholesale, retail, and remittance transactions on a global scale.

Progress remains limited ahead of deadline

According to the Financial Stability Board’s 2025 review, global progress towards meeting the G20’s speed target is significantly behind schedule. Currently, only 54.6% of wholesale cross-border payments are processed within one hour. The situation for retail payments is even more challenging, with just 35.4% meeting the same timeline. With the 2027 deadline drawing closer, international payment systems must accelerate improvements to achieve these expectations.

The roadmap also prioritizes reducing transaction costs. By 2027, the G20 calls for the average cost per international payment to fall to no more than 1%, and mandates that no payment corridor should exceed a 3% fee. Both speed and affordability are central elements of the reform.

Cross-border payment systems currently lag behind the G20’s objective, with only around half of wholesale transactions and little over a third of retail payments reaching beneficiaries in under one hour.

XRP gains attention amid G20 requirements

Although the G20 has maintained a technology-neutral stance, avoiding endorsement of any specific platform or asset, some analysts see the updated targets as an opportunity for digital assets like XRP. The roadmap leaves open the path for countries to use a variety of solutions, including traditional bank upgrades, instant payment systems, CBDCs, stablecoins, or other innovative financial technologies, to meet the new standards.

Analyst Crypto Rover argued that XRP could play a significant role as countries and payment providers look for faster and more efficient settlement options. They noted that XRP can process transactions within seconds and serve as a bridge asset for different currencies, potentially reducing the need for multi-step correspondent banking networks.

XRP’s capability to settle transactions in seconds positions it as a practical solution for streamlining international payments, especially as global financial institutions face pressure to meet new benchmarks.

Ripple, the technology firm behind payment infrastructure utilizing XRP and the XRP Ledger, has consistently promoted the use of these tools for international money transfers. However, the company and its asset operate independently. Ripple’s progress in this area highlights how emerging technologies are being considered as part of the response to the G20’s performance standards.

A recent statement from the 2026 G20 chair reaffirmed the group’s commitment to transforming cross-border payments. The announcement encouraged countries to extend payment system operating hours, adopt ISO 20022 messaging standards, and enhance cross-border data sharing, while acknowledging the role of digital innovation and digital assets in future financial infrastructure.

Technology and monitoring for real-time payments

As financial institutions and technology providers race to modernize cross-border payment systems, tools that deliver real-time insights and alerts become key for stakeholders. With the shift towards ultra-fast settlements and new digital assets entering the landscape, monitoring sudden changes in transaction speeds, network upgrades, or asset activity is crucial. CryptoAppsy enables users to set smart price alerts and monitor live news updates related to specific coins such as XRP, allowing investors and payment professionals to stay informed as the G20 initiatives drive changes across the sector.

The G20’s approach does not choose winners among payment technologies, but instead establishes performance targets intended to put competitive pressure on all market participants. Solutions that can execute international transactions quickly and reliably, such as XRP, are expected to remain central to the ongoing debate over cross-border payments modernization.
