Galaxy Research, the research branch of investment firm Galaxy Digital, has identified a mysterious pattern unfolding on the Bitcoin blockchain over the past two weeks. The revelation involves an unknown entity repeatedly embedding a short poem into Bitcoin transactions.
Duplicate poems spark speculation
Between October 12 and October 24, an unidentified sender has placed 26 identical versions of a three-line poem within Bitcoin’s public ledger. The poem reads: “thoughtless quartz clocks drift / blocks stack each a strict proof / timechain keeps score.”
Researchers discovered that these messages are stored using 103-byte OP_RETURN outputs, a technical execution that bypasses Bitcoin’s previous standard relay limit of 83 bytes. This approach allows for the inclusion of more information in each transaction aside from typical fund transfers.
In a recent post on X, Galaxy Research outlined how the anonymous operator has consistently used the same cryptographic keys to send not only the recurring poem, but also another previously unseen poem, which has been posted twice. This activity brings the total to 28 similar messages embedded in the Bitcoin blockchain across just 12 days.
With 28 deposits and 14 round trips between wallets, researchers observed only 8,015 satoshis spent on mining fees and a single 100,000 satoshi deduction made by the custodial service on October 19.
The research team emphasizes that the purpose behind these unusual transactions remains unclear. Analysis of the on-chain data suggests it is unlikely to be linked to conventional money laundering, as funds appear to only move back and forth between the sender and a custodial service.
Theories and technical details
Without a definitive explanation, researchers have put forward a few possibilities. One hypothesis is that the sender may be attempting to artificially inflate deposit or transaction volumes on the involved platform. Alternatively, the actions could be part of an automated integration test being run directly in production.
Another scenario considers the involvement of an autonomous AI agent, which could have been granted access to a Bitcoin wallet and programmed to execute these transactions systematically. However, Galaxy Research has not verified any of these possibilities and stresses that the actual motive remains unconfirmed.
According to Galaxy Research, the pattern would suggest that the next duplicate, the 27th, was expected to appear approximately 14 hours after the 26th. So far, the sender’s identity and underlying motivations continue to elude the analysts.
Challenges in blockchain monitoring
This episode highlights the complex and sometimes enigmatic activities that can occur on blockchain networks. As technical innovations and creative uses of transaction metadata evolve, market participants and analysts face new challenges in monitoring and interpreting blockchain activity.
In a market where a single Fed decision or a sudden altcoin listing can change everything in seconds, jumping between different apps for charts, news, and portfolio tracking is costing investors money. Smart traders are now utilizing privacy-first tools like CryptoAppsy to consolidate everything. Without even the hassle of creating an account, you get real-time charts, smart price alerts, coin-specific news, and critical macro data all on one screen.
Researchers from Galaxy Research remain unable to determine the true purpose behind the repeated poem inscriptions and reiterate that, as of now, the sender’s identity is unknown.
