Gold prices have declined to their lowest point in three months, despite a surge in oil prices driven by intensifying geopolitical tensions. Spot gold hovered near $4,024 on October 23 after briefly touching $3,986.50, placing the precious metal on course for a weekly loss of around 3.5%.

Oil Surge Adds Pressure

Brent crude advanced towards $115 per barrel on Friday, reaching a level not seen since May after renewed attacks targeted Saudi Arabian energy assets. Supply concerns deepened as incidents disrupted Saudi Aramco operations earlier in the week, fueling a rally that saw oil climb from $112 to $115 per barrel in just days.

Rising oil prices have translated into higher transportation and production costs, heightening the risk of further inflation. For gold, which often performs well during times of geopolitical uncertainty and inflationary pressure, the current environment has presented a contradiction as it is both a traditional safe haven and yet struggling to maintain support in this climate.

Reuters reported that investors increasingly anticipate elevated energy prices will keep inflation persistent, compelling the Federal Reserve to maintain higher interest rates for an extended period. Gold, which does not generate yield, faces additional competition from income-generating investments under such monetary conditions.

Central Banks Buy as Gold Slides

Despite the downward pressure on prices, institutional demand for gold has remained robust. Goldman Sachs estimated that central banks acquired 79 tonnes of gold in August, with purchases continuing even as bullion slid. However, this accumulation has not been enough to stem the latest decline.

Recent U.S. inflation figures revealed consumer prices rising 3.7% annually in September, highlighting the challenge the Federal Reserve faces as inflation remains above target and adding to the uncertainty for gold investors.

Technical and macroeconomic factors have reinforced the divide between traditional commodity correlations. The October selloff in gold has occurred alongside oil’s sharp advance, making the relationship between the two markets and monetary policy particularly significant heading into the close of the month.

Market Looks to Fed Rate Decision

The Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy meeting on October 27–28 is widely seen as the next key catalyst for gold prices. Most economists expect the Fed to leave interest rates unchanged, though the possibility of additional tightening later in the year remains in play. The decision will arrive just ahead of fresh inflation data due October 29, meaning investors face a critical window of economic developments.

Maintaining support at the psychological $4,000 level could be crucial for gold in the near term. A move above $4,050 may indicate cooling selling pressure, while reclaiming $4,100 would add to the prospects for a continued rally toward the $4,150–$4,200 range.

Alternatively, if gold persists below $4,000, technical analysts suggest the $3,950 level could be tested, with $3,900 becoming more likely if selling intensifies. Despite the current weakness, institutional outlooks remain cautious but optimistic over the longer term.

Morgan Stanley previously identified $4,000 as a potential support floor for gold, citing ongoing physical demand and the potential for lower U.S. Treasury yields to improve the metal’s prospects. At the same time, ongoing central bank purchases support a base of longer-term demand, if not an immediate rebound.

While gold’s trajectory hinges on these macroeconomic developments, monitoring investor activity and timing, particularly among alternative assets, has become increasingly important in volatile markets. In the meme token segment, an internet trend can rapidly drive millions of dollars of volume. Fomo App data pointed to a remarkable example: a $99 purchase of “Niu Lai” transforming into roughly $370,000. As investors assess asset classes across the board, platforms like Fomo App—featuring social feeds, investor rankings, and trade notifications—have gained traction for tracking timing and token selection in real-time.

Although persistent inflation and high oil prices have challenged gold’s role as a traditional hedge, the focus remains on upcoming Fed decisions and key technical thresholds to gauge the potential for stabilization or further declines.
