Gold prices have declined to $4,120 per ounce, down about 0.5% as of October 20. This pullback comes as investors await the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy meeting, navigating a market environment shaped by rising oil prices and the potential for higher interest rates, both of which typically diminish demand for non-yielding assets such as gold.

Gold stocks under pressure as bullion retreats

The recent dip in spot gold has translated into notable pressure on shares of major gold mining companies. Despite this, analysts have highlighted Newmont Corporation, Agnico Eagle Mines, and Kinross Gold as potentially attractive options for investors looking to take advantage of the current weakness ahead of 2027.

Market watchers point to a complex dynamic, where higher oil prices contribute to inflationary pressures but simultaneously bolster expectations for further rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. This dual effect limits appetite for gold even as it historically serves as an inflation hedge.

Rising oil prices are fueling inflation and increasing the likelihood of higher interest rates, which together have undermined demand for non-yielding bullion and added pressure to gold mining stocks.

Newmont: Strong balance sheet offers flexibility

Newmont Corporation, recognized as the world’s largest gold producer, continues to draw investor interest beyond any anticipated recovery in gold prices. The company generated $2.2 billion in free cash flow during the second quarter, finishing June with $3.4 billion in net cash. Newmont’s all-in sustaining costs were reported at $1,621 an ounce, providing a buffer against adverse price movements.

This financial strength allows Newmont to fund ongoing projects and repurchase shares, offering resilience during commodity market volatility. However, the company’s next major test arrives with its earnings announcement scheduled for October 22. Investors are expected to focus on production volumes and spending figures, as sustaining strong cash flow remains a critical factor for the investment case.

Agnico Eagle: Resilient operations and solid cash flow

Agnico Eagle Mines, a Canadian gold producer, appeals to investors who want gold exposure with a degree of insulation from direct price swings. In the second quarter, Agnico Eagle produced 855,816 ounces at an all-in sustaining cost of $1,459 per ounce. At the end of June, its net cash position was approximately $3.27 billion.

Despite reporting increased capital expenditures as it expands the Hope Bay project, Agnico maintains its full-year guidance for all-in sustaining costs at $1,475 per ounce—a signal of operational stability. The company expects 2026 output to be at the lower end of its 3.3 million to 3.5 million ounce guidance, reinforcing its reputation for consistent production and disciplined spending.

Kinross Gold: Higher costs, higher payouts

Kinross Gold, a mid-tier mining company, faces a more challenging outlook. In September, Kinross reduced its annual production guidance for 2026 and the following year to 1.85 million gold-equivalent ounces due to weather-related disruptions and operational setbacks at its La Coipa and Round Mountain mines.

The company also raised its 2026 all-in sustaining cost forecast to $1,875 per ounce. Nevertheless, Kinross increased its targeted shareholder returns to 50% of 2026 free cash flow, up from 40%. As of September 23, Kinross had already distributed around $800 million, $655 million of which came through share buybacks.

Core operations at Paracatu and Tasiast remain critical, with combined annual production projected at 1.1 million ounces. For investors willing to accept ongoing operational risks, the stable performance of these flagship mines and a stronger shareholder returns policy provide some incentive for gradual accumulation.

Mini dictionary: All-in sustaining costs (AISC), a financial metric used in the mining industry, represent the total costs required to produce an ounce of gold, including direct costs, sustaining capital, exploration, and other overhead. It helps investors gauge the profitability and cost-efficiency of mining operations.
