Liquity is defined as a decentralized application for borrowing cryptocurrency without paying interest rates on ETH collateral. The Liquity borrowing platform integrates two tokens, LQTY and LUSD, to provide liquidity for decentralized loans.
What Is Liquity (LQTY)?
Robert Lauko, who worked as a research associate responsible for the development of Internet Computer (IC) at DFINITY, launched the protocol in April 2021. Taking on his new role as founder and research director of Liquity, Lauko secured $8.4 million in funding across three rounds, primarily from Pantera Capital and Polychain.
In October 2022, Liquity introduced another innovation through Chicken Bonds. Chicken leveraged Liquity’s stablecoin to offer a yield-boosting bonding mechanism with an enhanced LUSD – bLUSD. This allowed LUSD depositors to achieve even higher returns against collateralized debt.
Liquity is marketed as slightly different from other decentralized applications. It is best described as a fundamental lending protocol because using Liquity effectively requires frontend operators. In other words, Liquity is more of an infrastructure application offering the logic of dual tokenomics management.
DeFi developers can then permissionlessly create a website to connect their services to the Liquity Protocol.
At the core of Liquity are “Stability Pools.” These are smart contracts that aggregate liquidity provided by liquidity providers (LPs) into a pool. On the borrowing side of the equation, borrowers enter a collateralized debt position (CDP) known as a “Trove” in Liquity.
