Initially, Tusk and Narwhal were the default consensus algorithms used by Sui; however, in August 2022, Bullshark replaced Tusk as the primary option. This change aimed to reduce latency issues and allow validators with lower transaction speeds to contribute effectively to the project. Tusk can still be utilized with updated resources. In essence, Narwhal functions as a mempool to ensure the availability of data submitted for consensus, and Bullshark (or Tusk) establishes the standard for arranging this data for the consensus engine. This forms part of the directed acyclic graph (DAG) mempool innovation offered by Sui. Combined with its innovative scaling solution, this setup is expected to enable the blockchain to achieve speeds of over 297,000 transactions per second.
