Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) has introduced a plan to redirect approximately $124 million in Zcash tokens from its treasury and future allocations to bolster mining rewards, prompting questions from industry participants over fund transparency and oversight.
Proposal details and potential impact
On Thursday, ZCG recommended transferring 36,200 ZEC, valued at about $46 million, from its current treasury holdings into the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM), a mechanism designed to secure ongoing funding for future mining rewards. This transfer would reduce the committee’s treasury from roughly 91,500 ZEC to around 55,200 ZEC, worth about $70 million at current prices.
Alongside the treasury transfer, ZCG proposed foregoing an additional 62,000 ZEC, or $78.5 million, in future token allocations. The committee plans to gradually reduce its funding over the next eight years, extending into 2032 rather than ending the automatic allocation in 2028 as previously scheduled. Helius co-founder and CEO Mert Mumtaz labeled the plan insufficient, arguing that ZCG’s reserves are already too extensive and that spending decisions should involve greater accountability to ZEC holders.
Tyler Winklevoss, co-founder of Gemini, echoed these concerns after Mumtaz reported on social media that a ZCG committee member had unfollowed him on X. Winklevoss remarked that such conduct called into question the suitability of granting oversight of $110 million to the committee.
