Decentralized derivatives platform Hyperliquid has permanently removed 49.87 million HYPE tokens from circulation, representing nearly 5% of its total maximum supply of 1 billion units. Blockchain data shows that the value of the destroyed tokens has reached $3.89 billion at current market prices.
Burn mechanism and protocol revenue
Hyperliquid’s supply burn is carried out through an automated process that converts protocol fee revenue into ongoing token buybacks from the open market. The platform’s historical revenue has now exceeded $1.38 billion, providing substantial fuel for this mechanism.
The system relies on a component known as the Assistance Fund, a smart contract structure with no private key access. This fund was officially recognized as burned after a validator vote in December 2025, with 85% of the network’s validators approving the status. The majority of trading fees, ranging from 97% to 99%, are funneled into this fund for the continuous execution of token buybacks and destruction.
Mini dictionary: Assistance Fund is a smart contract in Hyperliquid’s ecosystem used to accumulate trading fees and conduct token buybacks. It holds assets without private key control, allowing for verifiable transparency and automated operations.
In the latest 24-hour period, the system burned 19,700 HYPE tokens, equivalent to $1.59 million, from a total of $1.69 million in daily protocol fees. Over the last month, Hyperliquid generated $63.52 million in revenue, contributing to the platform’s overall revenue figure of $1.38 billion to date.
Deflationary model and future supply dynamics
Beyond basic trading fees, Hyperliquid implements additional automated mechanisms to maintain token scarcity. Buybacks are strictly denominated in US dollars, so the number of tokens retired per dollar can fluctuate as market prices move. With the current price of HYPE between $78 and $80, each dollar of fee results in a smaller volume of tokens destroyed, tightening the pace of the burn.
At the present rate of 19,700 tokens burned daily, monthly buybacks would amount to approximately 591,000 HYPE, which compensates for only about 6% of the monthly token unlocks.
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Total HYPE burned | 49.87 million |
| Max supply | 1 billion |
| Current price (approx.) | $78–$80 |
| Revenue (last 30 days) | $63.52 million |
| Daily burn (latest) | 19,700 HYPE ($1.59 million) |
| Monthly token unlocks | 9.9 million HYPE |
| Monthly burn (estimate) | 591,000 HYPE |
The platform’s long-term ability to reduce circulating supply now hinges on whether fee generation and subsequent burns can keep pace with ongoing token vesting for the development team and early backers. This vesting schedule introduces approximately 9.9 million HYPE into circulation each month, outpacing the current monthly burn rate.
While buybacks have succeeded in permanently removing a substantial portion of HYPE, the net circulating supply continues to grow since monthly unlocks significantly exceed the protocol’s burning capacity.
Hyperliquid’s ecosystem remains deflationary in design, but the overall supply is projected to rise unless platform activity and associated burns accelerate to match or exceed upcoming unlocks.
