Kraken’s tokenized equities ecosystem, xStocks, has reached $1 billion in assets under management, demonstrating strong demand for blockchain-based stock trading as investors seek access to traditional financial markets through digital infrastructure.
Rapid growth and market expansion
Payward, the parent company of Kraken, announced that xStocks surpassed the $1 billion mark on October 27, up significantly from about $225 million in February. The platform now offers more than 1,500 tokenized forms of stocks, ETFs, and IPOs covering American, British, European, and Hong Kong markets.
Launched in June 2025 with a starting lineup of 60 tokenized U.S. equities and ETFs on Solana, xStocks has quickly expanded its reach to over 10 blockchains, supported by hundreds of integrated partners. Payward reports that cumulative transaction volume has exceeded $45 billion, with more than 550,000 holders participating worldwide. Additionally, $100 million in xStocks has been routed into decentralized finance protocols, where eligible assets may be used as collateral or for lending opportunities.
Unlike traditional brokerage accounts, tokenized stocks on xStocks can be transferred between supported exchanges, wallets, and blockchain applications. Kraken has also extended access to conventional stock trading across Europe, giving eligible customers a choice between blockchain-based representations and traditional equities.
Recent expansions brought the inclusion of tokenized Russell 1000 constituents, further increasing xStocks’ coverage of prominent U.S. companies. However, the ecosystem’s figure of 1,500-plus tokenized assets does not guarantee universal availability across all jurisdictions or through Kraken directly.
Solana and Ethereum networks drive competition
Tokenized equities have become a highly contested sector within the crypto industry, as major blockchain networks compete to host trading, settlement, and financial applications linked to real-world assets.
Solana served as the initial platform for xStocks, providing the base infrastructure. Meanwhile, Ethereum-compatible chains have expanded the distribution of these digital securities. Mantle, a smart contract network, introduced tokenized equities through both xStocks and Bybit before rolling out a tokenized Franklin Templeton ETF.
Bybit has enabled select xStocks assets to be used as collateral for margin and lending products, allowing traders to leverage their tokenized equity stakes. Ondo Stocks, a competitor in the space, crossed $1 billion in tokenized asset value in August, illustrating how multiple providers are driving rapid sector growth.
Mini dictionary: Mantle is a modular Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) network focused on scalability, reduced transaction costs, and rapid finality for decentralized applications and products, including tokenized assets.
| Platform | Tokenized Asset Value | Main Networks | Products Supported |
|---|---|---|---|
| xStocks (Kraken) | $1 billion | Solana, Ethereum-compatible | Stocks, ETFs, IPOs, DeFi collateral |
| Ondo Stocks | $1 billion (as of August) | Ethereum | Tokenized stocks, financial applications |
Ownership structure and regulatory outlook
Despite considerable growth, xStocks remain distinct from traditional share ownership through brokerage accounts. The tokens are issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited and offer financial exposure to underlying equities but do not grant standard shareholder voting rights or direct cash dividend payments. Instead, any dividend benefits may be reflected through periodic token adjustments.
Access to xStocks remains limited for legal and regulatory reasons. U.S. residents and investors in several other jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom, cannot use the platform, and regional product eligibility varies by location. With increased scrutiny from established institutions, regulatory challenges have emerged. Recently, Microsoft, Google, and Goldman Sachs expressed concerns regarding tokenized shares, further intensifying debates around the legitimacy and integration of blockchain-based equities with traditional securities markets.
Recent developments highlight that while xStocks offer new ways for investors to access tokenized representations of equities, important differences remain in ownership structure, access, and regulatory treatment compared to traditional brokerage accounts.
