Lightning Labs, a leading firm behind core Lightning Network technologies, has launched the alpha version of Wavelength. With this toolkit, developers and AI agents can now integrate self-custodial Bitcoin payments into their applications by using a streamlined non-custodial API, eliminating the need to operate nodes, manage channels, or source liquidity themselves.

Wavelength lowers integration barriers

Wavelength is designed to address common integration hurdles for developers building Bitcoin or Lightning-based apps. Previously, utilizing Lightning required significant infrastructure and technical upkeep. By abstracting away node management and liquidity sourcing, Wavelength allows teams to enable instant, user-controlled payments with minimal effort.

Lightning Labs described the product as “Bitcoin on Easy Mode for Agents and Humans.” The system provides instant, global payments with low fees, while keeping users in control of their funds.

Wavelength turns the challenging parts of integrating Bitcoin and Lightning into a handful of API calls, allowing developers to focus on their applications rather than network infrastructure.

At its core, Wavelength includes a self-custodial wallet, operating within web or mobile apps via WebAssembly or compiled binaries, or as a standalone service. Users always retain control of their private keys on their own devices. The solution supports on-chain Bitcoin, Lightning payments conducted through atomic swaps, and an Ark-like off-chain settlement layer for efficient batch settlements to the blockchain.

Mini dictionary: Ark-like settlement layer, a mechanism inspired by the Ark protocol, facilitates quick, off-chain Bitcoin transfers between users while settling transactions to the Bitcoin blockchain in batches. This approach increases scalability and reduces on-chain transaction fees.

For reliable liquidity, Lightning payments are routed through Loop, a Lightning Labs service developed for seamless channel management. Settlement between users is coordinated by a service that never assumes unilateral control over funds. Users maintain the ability to perform a unilateral exit to on-chain Bitcoin at any time, preserving control and reducing custodial risk. Wavelength’s SDK is available as open source for broader community review and collaboration.

AI integration and system features

Wavelength’s API is accessible both to human developers and AI agents, utilizing the Model Context Protocol. This allows agents to hold balances and conduct microtransactions, such as paying for API calls or data streams in fractions of a cent. Security measures ensure wallet seeds and passwords are handled outside agent channels, enhancing user protection.

The platform integrates with the L402 protocol to enable machine-native authentication and per-request Lightning payments. Supported operations include wallet creation, unlocking, checking balances, sending or receiving payments, tracking recent activity, and executing withdrawals. Developers can adopt the system as an embedded SDK, through gRPC/REST APIs, browser-based WASM packages, or as an MCP server. Documentation is intended for both human programmers and AI agents and includes onboarding shortcuts and guidance.

Mini dictionary: L402 protocol enables authentication and micropayments within machine-to-machine or agent-to-agent transactions on the Lightning Network, using paid API endpoints.

Launch details and roadmap

The Wavelength toolkit is currently accessible on Bitcoin’s Signet and testnet environments. For mainnet use, access is by invitation and interested developers can apply for early admission after installing the toolkit. The release supports Bitcoin by default, while Lightning Labs is planning to add stablecoin support through Taproot Assets, providing a unified API for multiple asset types. Future updates may expand embedded mobile support and introduce optional direct Lightning channel management using Lnd.

During the closed alpha testing stage, Lightning transactions incur a service fee of 1 basis point in addition to standard Lightning routing fees. Regular on-chain Bitcoin transactions remain subject to the network’s usual fees. Pricing structures may change as the platform evolves.

Lightning Labs summarized the release by stating that Wavelength offers, “the easiest way to integrate bitcoin for agents and humans,” enabling instant, high-volume, low-fee transactions through a simple integration process. Instructions for requesting early mainnet access have been provided to interested developers.

Machines can pay machines and humans can pay humans anywhere, thanks to easy Lightning integration and self-custody by default.

By simplifying technical requirements, Lightning Labs aims for Wavelength to make self-custodial Bitcoin payments accessible to application developers, “vibe coders,” and autonomous agents as a standard feature. Full documentation, sample code, and the open-source SDK can be found on the project’s public repositories.
