Meanwhile, a Bermuda-based life insurance company operating entirely on Bitcoin, has secured $37.5 million from existing investors, bringing its total funding to over $180 million. The most recent investment round was led by Bain Capital Crypto, with additional participation from Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital.
Bitcoin-denominated life insurance model
The company positions itself as the first licensed life insurer to run its balance sheet, reserves, and audited financials exclusively in Bitcoin. After two years in the Bermuda Monetary Authority’s regulatory sandbox, Meanwhile received its full operating license in July 2024. All policyholder Bitcoin is held with regulated institutional custodians.
Among its prominent backers is OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, reflecting continued institutional interest in Bitcoin-focused insurance solutions.
Meanwhile’s international approach comes in response to rising demand for Bitcoin-based wealth management among affluent families abroad. The company highlighted a record year of growth, propelled largely by its BTC Life 1-Pay policy introduced in early 2026.
BTC Life 1-Pay policy and international reach
BTC Life 1-Pay is a single-premium whole life insurance policy designed for high-net-worth clients outside the United States. Under this offering, the client pays a one-time premium in Bitcoin and receives a guaranteed death benefit, denominated in Bitcoin, for the life of the policy. The value of the policy grows in Bitcoin, and after the first year, policyholders can borrow up to 90% of the policy’s value with no set repayment schedule or risk of margin calls.
Meanwhile has signed 15 brokers since launching this product, with representation in major insurance markets such as Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE, and Switzerland. The company reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed last year’s total.
Wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin. What they haven’t had is a regulated way to pass it on, observed Zac Townsend, co-founder and CEO of Meanwhile.
The company’s earlier 10-payment policy was aimed at American taxpayers, further diversifying its client base.
Institutional trends and broader adoption
This latest funding round highlights a broader movement to incorporate Bitcoin into mainstream financial planning. In one example of this trend, Delaware Life collaborated with BlackRock last year to offer access to Bitcoin through a fixed indexed annuity. Such alliances indicate rising insurer interest in linking digital assets with longstanding financial instruments.
Mini dictionary: Meanwhile is a Bermuda-registered life insurance provider that bases its entire business model on Bitcoin, holding all reserves and issuing all policies denominated in BTC, and claims to be the first insurer licensed to operate in this way under supervision from the Bermuda Monetary Authority.
