Japanese investment company Metaplanet, which is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, announced that it increased its Bitcoin holdings by 1,000 BTC during the third quarter of 2026. With this addition, Metaplanet has secured the position of the world’s second-largest corporate Bitcoin treasury.
Strategy behind Bitcoin sale and repurchase
In an official filing published Monday, Metaplanet revealed that it sold 10,000 BTC for approximately $789.2 million. Soon after, the company purchased 11,000 BTC for $948.7 million, with an average acquisition price of $86,246 per Bitcoin during the same period.
Company executives described the sale and repurchase as a deliberate move to demonstrate liquidity to investors. “The transaction was intended to strengthen confidence in the company’s creditworthiness and broaden its access to future financing, including corporate bonds and preferred shares, with the ultimate objective of increasing the group’s Bitcoin holdings,” Metaplanet stated in the filing.
“It demonstrated, through an actual transaction, that the Group can convert its bitcoin into cash and hold cash in excess of the aggregate outstanding principal amount of its bonds, borrowings and other interest-bearing liabilities.”
Chief Executive Officer Simon Gerovich indicated that Metaplanet’s cash holdings from the Bitcoin sale exceeded its total outstanding debt before the company reacquired more Bitcoin than was originally sold.
Mini dictionary: Metaplanet is a Japanese investment firm known for pivoting from its original hotel and technology operations to focus heavily on Bitcoin investment. It is often compared to Strategy, a major US-based company recognized for holding the largest corporate Bitcoin treasury globally.
Market impact and corporate status
The company’s announcement came as Bitcoin’s price rallied, lifting the value of corporate cryptocurrencies on their balance sheets. Metaplanet’s stock price advanced on Monday in response to the disclosure. Although the shares have fallen year-to-date, they have posted gains over the past month.
Metaplanet began transitioning its business model from hospitality and technology to Bitcoin investment in 2024, seeking to follow a similar approach to leading US-listed Bitcoin treasuries. The recent transactions increased Metaplanet’s total Bitcoin holdings to 44,000 coins, with a combined valuation estimated at $3.7 billion at current market prices.
| Company | Total Bitcoin Holdings | Estimated Value | Corporate Rank |

Executive statements and outlook
Simon Gerovich, Metaplanet’s chief executive, shared further insights about the transactions on social media, assuring investors of the group’s ability to swiftly convert digital assets to cash and efficiently manage debt obligations.
Gerovich explained that the company successfully converted Bitcoin into cash at levels exceeding all outstanding principal for bonds and interest-bearing liabilities, before purchasing more Bitcoin than was initially sold.
Metaplanet has been described as Asia’s counterpart to major Western Bitcoin-holding corporations, solidifying its new identity as a major institutional holder within the global digital asset landscape.
