Michael Saylor has provided new insights into Strategy’s recent Bitcoin sale, clarifying the rationale behind the move that marked a departure from his long-held “never sell” approach. Saylor emphasized that the primary motivation was to address concerns about the company’s ability to monetize its Bitcoin holdings without disrupting the broader market.

Bitcoin sale aimed to break the “doom loop” narrative

During an interview with The Diary Of A CEO, Saylor stated that market participants had questioned whether Strategy could sell a portion of its substantial Bitcoin reserves without triggering a significant downturn in BTC prices. He described this widespread skepticism as a potential “doom loop,” where the perception that the company cannot sell Bitcoin without destabilizing the asset would force it to rely solely on equity issuance to meet dividend commitments.

To test these assumptions, Strategy sold 32 BTC for approximately $2.5 million at prices ranging from $59,000 to $60,000. The move represented a small fraction of the company’s overall holdings but served as a carefully orchestrated trial of market depth and the treasuries’ liquidity strategy.

Rather than sparking a market collapse, Bitcoin prices continued to move higher after Strategy completed the sale. The transaction demonstrated that the company can access liquidity from its treasury holdings without causing broader volatility in the cryptocurrency market.

Saylor explained that while his advice to “never sell your Bitcoin” had been directed primarily at individual investors, Strategy, as a corporation, must balance different capital requirements and operational realities. The company sought to challenge the view among critics and short sellers who believed that divesting even a small portion of its Bitcoin stash would be financially damaging.

He said Strategy intentionally demonstrated that limited Bitcoin sales can occur without triggering a cascading effect throughout the market. In his view, the exercise “inoculated” the market against the assumption that institutional Bitcoin treasuries are trapped assets that cannot be monetized sustainably.

BTC holds above $65,000 as Strategy showcases flexibility

Following the recent sale, Bitcoin has stabilized near the $65,106 level, reflecting a gain of about 0.1% over the previous 24 hours. The cryptocurrency traded in a daily range between $64,695 and $65,234, with buyers consistently supporting the price above the critical $65,000 threshold.

Attempts to break out above the $65,200 to $65,300 resistance band faced persistent selling pressure, with buyers returning to defend key psychological levels. Should Bitcoin hold above $65,000, the path toward further gains could remain intact. A drop below that figure, however, might invite a retest of support at $64,800, signaling a potential shift in momentum toward the bears.

Saylor indicated that Strategy’s current breakeven for selling Bitcoin to fund dividends is around 3.2%. If the price of Bitcoin rises by that amount, the company could monetize a portion of its BTC reserves to meet shareholder obligations without needing to issue more stock.

That approach offers Strategy an alternate source of liquidity while retaining most of its Bitcoin exposure, highlighting that periodic sales by corporations do not have to threaten market stability.

Analysts are closely watching whether other major corporate holders will follow a similar model. The outcome of such market tests could have significant implications for the broader acceptance of Bitcoin and its viability as a corporate treasury asset.

As companies seek diversified and flexible strategies, platforms like 1stepSwap make it increasingly practical to move between traditional and blockchain-based assets. By bringing real-world assets like major U.S. stocks, gold, and silver onto the blockchain, 1stepSwap enables investors to access and trade these assets quickly through their wallets, offering the best available market prices and improving portfolio diversification without intermediaries or complicated procedures.
