Developers of BNB Chain have announced the public mainnet launch of opBNB, a Layer 2 network developed using Optimism’s OP Stack in the BNB Chain ecosystem.
opBNB Mainnet Launch
The core development team of BNB Chain has launched the public mainnet of opBNB, a Layer 2 network aiming to scale applications. The team noted that the public mainnet launch of opBNB was conducted after a comprehensive testing process to ensure the network’s reliability.
opBNB was developed using Optimism’s OP Stack software package. It is designed as a Layer 2 scaling solution to enable developers to deploy Ethereum-compatible decentralized applications (dApps) to an off-chain layer, and then secure them using the optimistic rollup technology by BNB Smart Chain (BSC). The goal is to increase transaction speed while reducing transaction fees associated with decentralized applications.
The development team initially launched the testnet of opBNB in June. Following this move, a limited mainnet version test was conducted in August, opening to a limited number of infrastructure providers. The public launch, which took place today, marks the end of the test phase for the mainnet.
opBNB Test Phase Completed
Arno Bauer, the senior solution architect of BNB Chain, stated in the launch announcement, “Scalability and security continue to be the top priorities for opBNB. Strict tests were successfully completed before making the mainnet public.”
opBNB is part of the BNB Chain ecosystem, which includes five different networks: BNB Smart Chain (BSC), which is a Layer 1 Blockchain compatible with EVM, Layer 2 solutions opBNB and zkBNB, BNB Beacon Chain serving as the staking and governance layer of the ecosystem, and BNB Greenfield, a data storage network.
