Para, a company providing wallet infrastructure for artificial intelligence agents, anticipates that the competition to establish a unified payment standard for agent-based transactions will result in multiple solutions rather than a single winner. Nitya Subramanian, CEO of Para, reported that x402, the open payment standard introduced by Coinbase, has gained significant traction among independent developers due to its relative ease of setup and quick integration.
Growing competition in agent payment protocols
According to Subramanian, the agent payment landscape has become increasingly crowded. While x402 has enabled fast, high-frequency micropayments using stablecoins through a revived HTTP status code, other major players have entered the scene. Google has proposed its own Agent Payments Protocol, and a collaboration between Stripe and Paradigm has produced the Machine Payments Protocol, each emphasizing different priorities for agent-based commerce.
Para operates behind many of these agent payment systems, maintaining what Subramanian described as a “somewhat neutral stance” across the various competing rails. She indicated that x402’s architecture is “very well set up for micro transactions,” such as pay-per-API-call activities that dominate current agent-to-agent payments.
Subramanian drew a distinction between these smaller transactions and larger-scale agentic commerce. She emphasized that, “not all agentic commerce will necessarily be in the form of kind of pay per API call,” highlighting that x402 may not provide a strong fit for more substantial purchases.
Fragmented adoption expected
As dollar amounts and transaction complexity increase, Subramanian expects other payment standards to gain ground. She explained that some protocols incorporate more nuanced features, such as recourse options and dispute resolution mechanisms, which become critical at higher transaction values.
Rather than foundational consolidation, Subramanian anticipates a fragmented adoption model. She compared this to traditional finance, where instruments like credit cards and ACH transfers serve different purposes and scenarios:
Subramanian concluded there is unlikely to be a one-size-fits-all standard for agent payments, remarking, “There’s a time and place for a credit card payment, and a time and place for an ACH.”
Governance of these protocols also remains unsettled. Coinbase, Cloudflare, and Stripe have formed the x402 Foundation to guide the development and deployment of the x402 standard, with plans to shift its oversight under the Linux Foundation. Meanwhile, Stripe is supporting an alternative payment protocol, demonstrating the industry’s ongoing divergence.
Prioritizing compatibility and user needs
For developers and companies deciding which payment rail to implement, Subramanian contended that the core consideration should be the specific needs and context of the transaction, not allegiance to a particular standard.
She argued that the relevant question for builders is not which standard will prevail, but which protocol best suits the payment being executed.
