PEPE delivered a notable performance on October 23, with the meme coin rallying up to 14% within the day. This move contrasted with Bitcoin’s subdued trading behavior near $81,700, highlighting a sharp divergence between risk assets and the largest digital currency.

Traders Seek Volatility Beyond Bitcoin

PEPE’s rise appears driven by increased speculative interest rather than any concrete project announcement or underlying shift in fundamentals. The token has a history of sharp upswings when risk appetite returns among cryptocurrency traders, particularly those searching for outsized returns beyond mainstream assets like Bitcoin.

In September, PEPE posted a 42% rally for the week, pushing beyond $0.000005 as momentum spilled over into other meme coins. This pattern suggests that when Bitcoin’s price action tightens, traders often rotate into smaller, higher-volatility tokens seeking faster gains, although there is no definitive evidence confirming that capital moved directly from Bitcoin into PEPE during this period.

Derivatives market activity may also help explain the surge. Coinpaper, a digital asset research platform, highlighted on October 19 that PEPE’s outstanding futures positions reached about $269 million, while the futures volume continued to outpace spot trading.

Data on October 23 indicated that open interest in PEPE futures climbed an additional 2% in 24 hours, signaling heightened trading interest and the establishment of new positions. Still, rising open interest on its own does not guarantee upward price movement, as both buyers and sellers participate equally in futures contracts and leverage can quickly reverse short-term trends.

Coinpaper reported rising PEPE futures open interest alongside strong trading volume, signaling increased speculative activity even as Bitcoin’s volatility remained subdued.

Exchange Supply and Whale Activity

On-chain measurements provide additional context to PEPE’s price action. According to October 23 analysis citing data from blockchain intelligence firm Santiment, the portion of PEPE tokens held on exchanges fell from 18.75% at the start of September to roughly 17.8% by late October.

This decline in exchange supply typically points to less immediately available tokens for sale, which can support price stability or further rallies. Still, moving tokens off exchanges into private wallets does not automatically mean fresh demand increased, as it may simply reflect investors storing assets in personal custody.

Wallets holding more than one billion PEPE controlled 96.38% of the supply by October 23, showing a minor decrease from 96.4% at September’s start. While a small shift toward slightly smaller holders was observed, the overall concentration remains high and does not indicate large-scale accumulation by new investors.

Analysts note that even previous episodes of significant whale buying failed to prevent extended periods of price weakness, suggesting continued caution despite shifting supply dynamics.

Technical Outlook and Key Levels

Technically, PEPE now faces strong resistance near $0.00000476, which marks the upper boundary of its recent symmetrical triangle pattern. To sustain its rally, the token would need to break above this region.

If successful, PEPE could retest the $0.000005 area—a level that previously served as a milestone in the October uptrend. Further gains could bring the price toward a higher target range between $0.00000515 and $0.00000550, where selling pressure reemerged during prior rallies.

Support LevelCurrent PriceResistance LevelPotential Target
$0.00000433$0.00000476$0.00000476$0.00000515–$0.00000550

Should PEPE lose support at $0.00000433, the recovery could quickly falter, opening the way toward lower levels like $0.00000414. Historic periods of meme coin outperformance have shown that tokens like PEPE can decouple from Bitcoin’s price action in the short term, but these moves have not always led to sustained bullish trends.
