Philosopher Troy Cross, a professor at Reed College known for his work at the intersection of philosophy and cryptocurrency, shared his perspective on Bitcoin’s evolving societal role in a recent interview. Cross argued that while governments are unlikely to relinquish control over money issuance in the near future, Bitcoin serves as an important check against unchecked currency creation.

Bitcoin’s role as a counterbalance

Cross stated that Bitcoin offers people an alternative when faced with policies of excessive money printing by central authorities. He believes that as inflation becomes an ongoing concern, both individuals and institutions increasingly view Bitcoin as a potential safeguard for their assets.

Bitcoin puts a check on endless money printing because people will take refuge in it when trust in state-backed currencies declines.

He noted that this dynamic does not require governments to voluntarily adopt Bitcoin or stop their current fiscal practices. Instead, Bitcoin’s existence and accessibility create market pressure, offering citizens a degree of economic freedom that did not previously exist.

The adoption timeline: innovators to academics

During the discussion, Cross highlighted a pattern in adoption across various social groups. He observed that technological innovators were the earliest to embrace Bitcoin, followed by those in finance, and then journalists. According to Cross, academic circles are likely to lag behind, as they often adopt new technologies only after they are widely recognized and established elsewhere.

While innovators and the financial sector tend to understand the value of Bitcoin early, academics are typically among the last to seriously engage with it.

Cross suggested that resistance in academic circles stems from a degree of institutional inertia and skepticism about digital currencies. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence that broader adoption will occur as education efforts continue and Bitcoin becomes a more normal part of the financial discourse.

Brand challenges and public perception

Cross addressed the perception issue facing Bitcoin, explaining that many people still confuse it with broader cryptocurrency markets or see it as too specialized. He emphasized the importance of clear messaging and education, citing recent public campaigns and increased engagement with Bitcoin-related content in major media as signs of growing interest.

He referenced survey data, such as the Nakamoto Project and a 2026 survey, showing Bitcoin’s recognition is spreading while also becoming a topic of political polarization. Despite ongoing debates, Cross noted that key metrics—such as article engagement rates—suggest the public is becoming more receptive to learning about Bitcoin.

Cross also pointed out that Bitcoin’s price movements serve as a universal signal, drawing in new participants and sparking broader conversations around financial systems and personal sovereignty.

Separation of money and state

Looking ahead, Cross argued that Bitcoin continues to force a broader conversation about the relationship between money and government. He believes that, even in the absence of direct policy changes, the option for people to store value outside traditional systems compels governments to consider the longer-term impact of inflation and currency devaluation.

Cross concluded that the ongoing increase in Bitcoin adoption and visibility reflects not just technical innovation, but also a shift in cultural attitudes towards financial independence and the role of state authority in the digital age.
