Polygon Labs’ Information Security Director Mudit Gupta announced that their systems were unaffected by the CrowdStrike update, which impacted various sectors globally. The update to CrowdStrike’s Falcon Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) software caused blue screen errors and system crashes for millions of Windows users, affecting critical infrastructures like airlines, railways, and exchanges. However, Polygon Labs managed to avoid these issues.
Polygon Labs Unaffected by CrowdStrike Update
Gupta emphasized that despite using CrowdStrike services, Polygon Labs avoided the problems that troubled other organizations.
He attributed their success to their strict protocols of not deploying non-critical updates without thorough testing. Gupta expressed surprise that other companies did not adopt similar preventive measures.
Global Outage Exposed Security Flaws in Web2 Technologies
The impact of the CrowdStrike error highlighted the security vulnerabilities in the current IT infrastructure, which still heavily relies on Web2 technologies. This incident was seen as a strong argument for industries to transition to more resilient and decentralized Web3 technologies.
Unlike traditional IT infrastructures, the decentralized nature of Blockchain networks like Polygon ensures continuity even if some supporting services are affected.
Unaffected During the Outage
During the outage, crypto and Web3 services largely remained operational. For example, Bybit, a leading cryptocurrency exchange, assured its users that its operations were unaffected by global IT issues. Gupta noted that even if Polygon Labs were affected by such an event, the decentralized architecture of the Polygon network would ensure smooth operation.
This outage exposed the fragility of centralized systems. Experts in the cryptocurrency field reiterated that industries should adopt Blockchain and cryptocurrencies as more robust alternatives. Solana Labs co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko compared all Microsoft Windows machines to clients connected to a massive, singular Windows computer, emphasizing that the nature of current systems is already outdated.
