Ghostface Killah, known for his role in the popular hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan, announced that he will release a special music piece in Bitcoin Ordinals format. In a post on social media platform X, the rapper mentioned that there will be 10,000 pieces available through a free minting process. He also revealed that the owners will have Creative Commons Zero (CC0) rights to the music.
A Notable Move from the Famous Artist
CC0 signifies that copyright interest has been waived for a particular work, allowing others to freely create, develop, and reuse the works as they wish. According to Ghostface, the Bitcoin Ordinal collection was made possible through a collaboration with Ordinals Bot, Rare Scrilla, and NakaPepes.
The rapper’s entry into the crypto industry goes back to 2017 when he attempted to establish his own cryptocurrency company, Cream Capital. The venture aimed to raise $30 million through an Initial Coin Offering (ICO), a popular method for celebrity involvement at the time. Ordinals are encoded into the Bitcoin ecosystem using the Bitcoin blockchain network and require minting tokens. According to the Ord io website, at the time of writing this article, there were only 1,290 audio files inscribed on Bitcoin.
The Ordinal Process and the Bitcoin Network
Releasing exclusive music or rights to previously released music as NFTs is becoming increasingly popular for new musicians. Platforms like Sound xyz and Audius use blockchain-supported solutions to give musicians more control over their content.
However, using Bitcoin Ordinals as a tool for musicians to offer special music albums and exclusive benefits to their fans is not yet widespread. Ordinals gained popularity when they were first introduced on the Bitcoin mainnet by developer Casey Rodarmor at the beginning of 2023.
Since then, their presence in the crypto space began to wane, but on March 4th, it was reported that Ordinals made a comeback, outperforming Ethereum in weekly sales. Additionally, the Ordinals ecosystem has managed to attract the interest of major brands. The NFT marketplace SuperRare announced on March 15th that it had expanded to Bitcoin Ordinals and introduced a brand new Ordinals collection called No Brainers.
