SEC lawsuit reveals XRP sales

Garlinghouse’s personal XRP sales became a significant point of discussion following disclosures from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) lawsuit against Ripple. The SEC’s amended complaint detailed that Garlinghouse sold in excess of 357 million XRP between April 2017 and October 2020, earning an estimated $159 million in proceeds during that period.

According to court documents, Garlinghouse’s transactions were executed through cryptocurrency exchanges as well as market makers. His legal representatives did not contest the fact of these sales, which were confirmed by the July 2023 summary judgment. The record established that these transactions took place while he continued to voice optimism about XRP’s future prospects.

The SEC also claimed that Garlinghouse appeared to suspend his XRP sales during times of price declines and resumed them when market conditions improved. These actions were highlighted alongside his multiple public affirmations of faith in the asset.

Court filings show Garlinghouse sold more than 357 million XRP between April 2017 and October 2020, with proceeds estimated at $159 million, all while maintaining a bullish public outlook on the cryptocurrency.

Community backlash after sales disclosure

The gap between Garlinghouse’s consistent public support for XRP and the scale of his personal sales has intensified criticism from the XRP community. Recent discussion began when a prominent analyst on social platform X pointed out these transactions, questioning Garlinghouse’s declared commitment to XRP.

The skepticism deepened with reminders that, during court proceedings, Garlinghouse often reaffirmed that Ripple and its leadership remained deeply invested in XRP’s long-term success. He stated that Ripple “will never give up on XRP.” However, many community members are now asking why such extensive personal sales occurred alongside these proclamations.

Despite the scrutiny of his trading activity, the court ultimately determined that Garlinghouse’s personal sales did not violate securities regulations. In October 2023, the SEC formally dropped all remaining personal claims against him, closing the legal chapter, but not ending public debate around his actions.

XRP Army raises further leadership concerns

The discussion has drawn broader attention, with several community members referencing similar activity among Ripple’s executive team. One commenter noted that former Ripple CTO David Schwartz had sold the majority of his longtime XRP holdings, adding to concerns over leadership alignment with retail investors.

Additional voices in the community have criticized the company’s monthly distributions from escrow, arguing that ongoing executive and organizational sales contrast sharply with the public’s accumulation of the token. Some have called for a shift in strategy or greater transparency from Ripple’s top leadership.

As debate over the alignment between Ripple’s public messaging and executive actions grows, monitoring significant wallet movements and transaction data has become even more important for XRP holders. CryptoAppsy’s real-time charts and smart price alerts offer a focused way to track large transfers or sudden market shifts related to XRP, keeping users informed if similar executive transactions reappear in the future.

Despite the SEC dropping all remaining personal charges in October 2023, many in the XRP community continue to question the consistency between Ripple leadership’s public statements and personal market behavior.
