As the influence of cryptocurrencies on US politics grows, Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer, David Schwartz, has made financial contributions in XRP to John Deaton’s Senate campaign. Deaton, a lawyer known for his prominent support of Ripple in its legal battle with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), commands a sizeable following within the crypto community. His latest support comes as Deaton seeks office, drawing attention from both political and crypto circles.

Crypto fuels political change

Recently, the presence of cryptocurrency donations in the political arena has been steadily increasing. John Deaton is structuring his Senate campaign by attracting direct support from grassroots investors, stepping away from conventional fundraising methods. He communicates his views to a broad audience through social media, aiming to finance his campaign through public contributions. David Schwartz’s donation, made in XRP, aligns directly with this community-driven approach.

Deaton’s stance on Ripple and crypto regulation has made him a familiar figure in American public discourse. Most recently, he entered the spotlight by running against Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren in the 2024 Senate race. Despite Warren’s tough position towards cryptocurrencies and Deaton’s inability to secure a victory, his campaign has sustained widespread support from the crypto community.

“I don’t operate like career politicians. I won’t accept money from PACs or lobbyists and I avoid any methods that prioritize special interests,” John Deaton announced on social media, emphasizing his commitment to relying on small donations throughout his campaign.

Major players, major spending

While Deaton and candidates like him focus on grassroots backing, the broader industry presents a different picture. According to Politico’s latest report, large-scale political action committees (super PACs) are assembling multimillion-dollar funds to promote crypto-friendly candidates. Most notably, Fairshake—a super PAC sponsored by Ripple Labs and other industry leaders—has already funneled $28 million into primary races this election cycle alone.

In previous cycles, Fairshake reportedly spent close to $40 million to counter crypto-hostile politicians such as Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown. These hefty expenditures are intended to boost the visibility of pro-crypto political stances across the US.

Voters remain cautious

Despite such large-scale inflows from industry organizations, the US electorate continues to approach cryptocurrencies with caution. Industry insiders are ramping up donations and advertising campaigns to gain broader public support, but the shift in public opinion is likely to be gradual.

The integration of cryptocurrencies into campaign financing has sparked new debates and is prompting a re-examination of established political funding norms. While sector leaders highlight individual contribution models, some major players are operating with far larger strategies and resources.

The role of cryptocurrencies in US politics appears set for more debate in the near future. Both independent, grassroots-powered candidates such as Deaton and major institutional backers are drawing attention as they shape the evolving political landscape.
