Ripple has broadened its presence in institutional finance with the opening of a Wall Street swap desk, signaling a deeper push into capital markets traditionally dominated by established banks. The move draws attention to Ripple’s efforts to align its digital asset infrastructure with key functions found in traditional financial systems.

Ripple’s multi-asset swap desk structure

Versan Aljarrah, founder of Black Swan Capitalist, described Ripple’s latest initiative as a swap desk operating under a consolidated balance sheet and encompassing stocks, indexes, and cryptocurrencies. He drew parallels between Ripple’s ecosystem and the core roles of a central bank, particularly in issuing currency, operating settlement platforms, and intermediating credit extension between counterparties.

Aljarrah outlined how RLUSD, Ripple’s stable digital dollar, operates as the monetary instrument, the XRP Ledger (XRPL) acts as the backbone settlement system, and Ripple Prime functions as the hub for credit and institutional trading. He identified the new “Delta One” swap desk as the live implementation of this integrated approach within Ripple’s expanding institutional service suite.

Aljarrah characterized Ripple’s structure as “one balance sheet,” integrating stocks, indexes, and crypto, and compared its operations to central bank functions: “A central bank does three jobs: it issues the money, it runs the settlement system, and it stands in the middle when credit is extended.”

This consolidation could facilitate frictionless capital flow between traditional financial markets and digital asset networks, enabling institutions to access a wider range of trading opportunities within a single platform.

Mini dictionary: RLUSD – RLUSD is Ripple’s stablecoin designed to represent a digital dollar, used for payments, settlement, and liquidity across Ripple’s financial products.

XRP’s role as a reserve asset

Central to Aljarrah’s analysis is the positioning of XRP, Ripple’s native digital asset, as the reserve asset at the core of Ripple’s institutional architecture. He argued that XRP serves as a scarce and stable base within Ripple’s evolving financial framework.

Aljarrah associates RLUSD with stable value transfers, the XRP Ledger as the fundamental settlement layer, and Ripple Prime plus Delta One as extensions into institutional trading and credit markets. This approach envisions XRP not only as a digital asset but as a foundational element for liquidity and reserves within a multi-layered ecosystem.

Aljarrah described XRP as “the reserve asset at the center,” suggesting its potential for an organizing role within Ripple’s institutional framework, beyond its uses as an exchange-traded token.

He emphasized that positioning does not equate to Ripple functioning as a legal central bank, but rather highlights similarities in product design and purpose.

Institutional expansion and regulatory steps

According to Aljarrah, Ripple’s approach reflects a phased strategy: securing additional licenses, reaching new markets, and extending operational hours. This incremental roadmap, he stated, could gradually expand Ripple’s institutional reach by adapting to evolving regulatory requirements and market opportunities.

A multi-asset swap desk integrated across traditional and crypto markets could help institutions manage positions and liquidity outside standard trading hours, making use of the 24/7 nature of crypto markets. However, such integration would necessitate comprehensive compliance controls and robust risk management to address the complexities of combining issuance, settlement, and credit within a single platform.

Aljarrah concluded that Ripple is turning into “a central bank of its own kind,” with XRP positioned at the heart of this evolving model. He framed Delta One as part of Ripple’s broader expansion into institutional finance, marking another layer in the company’s strategic development.
