The stablecoin market saw two major treasury actions this week, marking a clear divide in the strategies and scale of leading digital dollar issuers. Ripple minted $10 million in RLUSD stablecoins directly onto the XRP Ledger, while nearly simultaneously, Tether issued $1 billion in USDT on the Tron blockchain. With this move, Tether’s treasury inventory on Tron reached $91 billion.

Diverging stablecoin strategies

While both transactions reflect active treasury management, the stark difference in volume highlights the fundamentally different approaches taken by Ripple and Tether. Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin issuer, focuses on the mass retail segment and crypto trading, where instant access to sizable liquidity plays a crucial role for traders and exchanges worldwide.

In contrast, Ripple has chosen not to vie for market supremacy in retail stablecoins. RLUSD, Ripple’s stablecoin, currently holds a market capitalization of $1.52 billion, about 20% below its peak in May. Rather than broad issuance, Ripple targets B2B clients, offering RLUSD on a selective basis for commercial companies through its Ripple Mint platform.

Mini dictionary: Ripple Mint, Ripple’s enterprise-grade stablecoin issuance platform, is designed to allow institutions to mint, manage, and redeem RLUSD for specialized cross-border and B2B payment flows within regulatory guidelines.

Whale activity intensifies around $1 XRP level

Ripple’s latest $10 million RLUSD mint coincided with a surge in large-investor, or “whale,” transactions on the XRP spot market. While the company manages RLUSD issuance under the oversight of the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), on-chain trackers observed that major holders accumulated more than 380 million XRP in the past week.

The activity centered around the $1 mark, which holds psychological significance for XRP traders and investors. Large market participants are actively defending this price as a key support level, seeking to prevent further declines in XRP’s price.

Market observers note a substantial build-up in whale positions around the $1 threshold, signaling coordinated efforts to maintain support for XRP as the stablecoin ecosystem grows more competitive.

Ripple continues to focus its RLUSD issuance on strategic B2B partnerships, experimenting with use cases centered on high-value corporate payments and cross-border flows. Meanwhile, Tether remains the dominant player in retail settlements, maintaining deep pools of liquidity across multiple blockchains.

Stablecoin market outlook

As summer market activity lingers in a consolidation phase, large investors are positioning for potential volatility by increasing their exposure to XRP and related stablecoins. Ripple’s technical upgrades and ongoing RLUSD trials within its niche market signal a continued push into the B2B payments sector.

According to market analysts, the split between mass-market and business-focused stablecoin strategies is expected to widen in the coming quarters, as regulatory scrutiny and user demand drive further product differentiation.

Ripple, founded in 2012, is a San Francisco-based technology company specializing in global payments and blockchain-based financial solutions. Tether, established in 2014, operates the world’s largest stablecoin by market capitalization and serves as a primary liquidity vehicle for digital asset trading worldwide.

Recent developments underscore the evolving landscape of stablecoin issuance. While Tether expands its reach among traders and retail users, Ripple is refining RLUSD for targeted business transactions, solidifying its niche in the market.
